In today’s era of media consolidation, where local journalism is diminishing, there is a pressing need to safeguard and empower local media. Public access media aids in fostering thriving communities by providing platforms for both local government communication and community expression. These media centers serve as vital spaces where communities can share their stories and perspectives through citizen journalism, advocating for their neighborhoods and promoting inclusivity across diverse cultures.

Yet, as more households shift from cable to streaming services, traditional funding sources like cable franchising agreements are dwindling. This financial strain poses a significant risk to community media centers.

Considering their embedded presence in local communities, we ask what responsibilities should large streaming and broadcast corporations bear in preserving local media access?
