The Gaylord Building Historic Site is proud to announce the opening of a new temporary exhibit, “Rise from Ruins: The Great Lockport Fire of 1895.” This new exhibit captures one of the most defining moments in Lockport’s history—the 1895 fire that not only ravaged the city’s downtown but also led to the establishment of the Lockport Fire Department. The exhibit will be open to the public through September 25, 2024.

“Rise from Ruins” takes visitors on a journey through Lockport as it was in the 1890s, offering glimpses into local life before, during, and after the catastrophic fire. Key sections of the exhibit cover the fire’s devastating impact and the resilient spirit of the Lockport community as they rebuilt their town from the ashes. The narrative culminates in the birth of the Lockport Fire Department, a critical institution that has safeguarded the city ever since.

A standout feature of “Rise from Ruins” is the vivid, original chalk artwork by local Lockport artist Kevin Traynor. Spanning the entire gallery space, Traynor’s work brings the history of Lockport to life in a unique way that will appeal to art and history lovers alike.

“A lot of the art I produce is of a temporary nature,” says Traynor. “It is really a metaphor for life in that it's only around for a short time, so you have to enjoy the beauty of it while it's here.” He says he was drawn to this project because it would allow him to show how a disastrous event can inspire. “I also found new admiration and respect for our firefighters and discovered that truly they are a family. My gratitude goes to all of them and all that have come before.”

In addition to Traynor’s artwork, the exhibit features historical photographs and provides a comprehensive narrative of the 1895 fire. The combination of these elements offers visitors a greater understanding of how this disaster shaped Lockport’s future.

“We’re thrilled to bring this important chapter of Lockport’s history to life through such an innovative and engaging exhibit,” says Clint Cargile, Manager of Public Programs at the Gaylord Building. “Kevin Traynor’s artwork adds a unique dimension to the story, making it accessible and relatable to all who visit.”

“Rise from Ruins: The Great Lockport Fire of 1895” is generously sponsored by Realtopia Real Estate, Inc., Berkots Super Foods, and The Coyle Law Office. The exhibit is located on the 3rd floor of the Gaylord Building and will be open through September 25. Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM; Saturday, 12pm to 5pm; and Sunday 12pm to 3pm. Admission is free.
