Join us on Monday, starting at KCS at 9:30AM for Kent's most glorious Memorial Day Parade!
What is the significance of Memorial Day? Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, is a day to remember and mourn those who have died while serving in the military, often in battle or due to wounds sustained in service. Along our parade route, wreaths will be laid to memorialize and honor those who have died in service and also to read proclamations and declaration, especially the Gettysburg Address, and also to play "Taps" and to fire off a 21 gun salute to our fallen citizens. While Memorial Day is a time of somber reflection, the day also has celebrations and picnics (do attend the Kent Lions Ice Cream social at the Community House after the parade and also Land Trust picnic on their field just south on Rt 7 in the afternoon), get your patriotic wave on with flags provided by the Kent Lions, and also, as a special treat, we should see a "fly over "Kent from a military aircraft (C130 Hercules) courtesy of the CT Air National Guard out of Bradley Airfield, weather dependent. Speaking of weather, and we'll keep our hopes up for a bright and sunny day, if there is a forecast of rain, the celebration of Memorial Day will continue at the Community House around 9:30AM where many of the same memorials for our fallen soldiers will continue to take place...definitely worth attending!
