Traumatized by the death of his family, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) roams the desert wilderness of a post-apocalyptic Australia in a scarred, black supercharged V-8 Pursuit Special. While scavenging for food and gas he stumbles onto a compound held under siege by the Marauders and their leader the large and disfigured Lord Humungus (Kjell Nilsson).
