Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area presents

Wonders of Winter Wildlife

(ROGERS, Ark.) – From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., January 18, Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area will present Wonders of Winter Wildlife (WOWW), a bevy of inspiring and enjoyable activities. Tabletop booths and kid’s crafts will feature winter birds, bald eagles, deer and black bears. The event is sponsored by Bluebird Shed, 3-D Pet Products, Ozark Bird Conservancy and Friends of Hobbs. Come and go as you wish, and all activities are free. Enjoy a hot beverage and make a s’more at the pavilion. Except for the s’mores, all activities will be indoors.

9 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. - Birds and Breakfast: See live songbirds captured in the park by ornithologists and released after learning more about them. Breakfast snacks, juice and coffee will be provided. Come and go as you please.

11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Snoozing Snakes – How Reptiles and Amphibians Survive Winter: Meet a live snake, turtle and tree frog. Learn how these cold-blooded creatures use their special adaptations to survive the winter.

1 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. – Black Bears in Arkansas: Black bears are perhaps one of the most charismatic, yet intimidating species in Arkansas. By the early 1900s, the species was almost eliminated from the state. The population has successfully been restored thanks to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). In this program presented by Levi Horrell with AGFC, we will learn about black bear biology, the successful reintroduction of this large mammal to the state, harvest information and more. Prepare to learn about black bears in the Ozarks while they are enjoying their winter nap…perhaps closer than you might think.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Squirrel Hike: Nutty Forest Friends & Bushy Tailed Benefits – January 21 is National Squirrel Day! Did you know a group of squirrels is called a “scurry”? Can you spot a drey? Join a park interpreter on an easy .25 mi. hike around the ADA accessible Ozark Plateau Trail and learn more about four of Arkansas’ squirrel species and how they are the unsung heroes of the forest. There will also be a visit from a “special” squirrel during the hike! All ages welcome.

For more information, contact the park’s visitor center at 479-789-5000.
