Albany, NY -- The University at Albany Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to announce its performances for the 2024-25 season. Offering concerts by guest artists, faculty and students, the Department will present 27 performances.  The Theatre Program will mount three full productions offering five to six performances of each show as well as its annual festival of new plays. 

All performances by the Department of Music and Theatre take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the main University at Albany campus at 1400 Washington Avenue. The complete schedule of the Department’s performances is as follows:

Capital Trio

Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 3pm

The Capital Trio performs music by Beethoven and Rebecca Clarke.

Lifchitz Plays Lifchitz: 60 Years of Piano Music

Tuesday, September 22, 2024, at 4pm

Max Lifchitz performs his own piano compositions written over the last 60 years.

SUNY Oneonta Duo

Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 7:30pm

As part of our yearly Ensemble in Residence exchange, a duo from SUNY Oneonta comes to perform new works.

Imani Winds: The French Connection

2024 Grammy Winner IMANI WINDS visit UAlbany to present a program of French music.

Based on the real-life sensational murder trial that also inspired “Double Indemnity,” this 1928

Expressionist classic follows “ordinary young woman” Helen Jones from her job in a stifling office,

to marrying her predatory boss; from a breath of air with the lover she meets in a speakeasy, to

murdering her husband after her lover abandons her; all building to a climatic courtroom scene.

A stunning, groundbreaking feminist work, directed by Sarah Blush in her UAlbany debut.

Fall Choral Hour

The Fall Choral Hour showcases the University Chamber Singers and University Community Chorale as well as selected student soloists from the Department of Music and Theatre in a performance of music from a wide array of style and culture.

The Ulysses Quartet in Concert

Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 3pm

The Ulysses String Quartet will present a program of music by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Britten, and a world premiere by Christina Bovey.

More Than You Know (Melanie Shank & Joshua Tanis)

UAlbany Music program alumni Melanie Shank (’12, ’22) and Joshua Tanis (’13) reminisce about their undergraduate musical experiences and how they have shaped their current careers. With music from Mozart to Gershwin, this recital features years-old favorites and new adventures from over a decade of collaboration.

Mary Shelley was just 18 when she wrote Frankenstein on a dare, shocking readers in the 1830s,

and giving us one of the most enduring and misunderstood creatures of all time. The first

production of a new work by the Theatre Program’s resident playwright, this play captures the

youth, vitality, obsession with science, and hunger for life of Mary Shelley and her friends,

rewriting all the rules and bringing to life a masterpiece.

This “musical that deals with mutating identity and time warps has become one of the most

mutated, time-warped phenomena in show business.” (New York Times) So “Let’s do the Time

Warp again!” in this return to the stage version of the cult classic.

University Symphony Orchestra Concert

With Conductor Christopher David Neubert, this large ensemble performs works representing outstanding repertoire from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods of the 20th and 21st centuries.
