The Film Lovers in Carroll County (FLICC) select four international films that broaden our view of cinema. This year’s films immerse audiences in new cultures and stories, from a toilet cleaner in Tokyo who reflects on finding beauty in the world, to a man embarks on an emotional journey to find his first love, to the two-bit Berlin criminal Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), to a Parisian taxi driver and his elderly passenger.

Hirayama feels content with his life as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. Outside of his structured routine, he cherishes music on cassette tapes, reads books and takes photos. Through unexpected encounters, he reflects on finding beauty in the world.

This film is directed by acclaimed German New Cinema Director Wim Wenders. We are also showing his documentary Anselm in January.

In this visually and conceptually impressive film, two-bit Berlin criminal Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) delivers some smuggled loot for his boss, Ronnie (Heino Ferch), but accidentally leaves the 100,000 mark payment in a subway car. Given 20 minutes to come up with the money, he calls his girlfriend, Lola (Franka Potente), who sprints through the streets of the city to try to beg the money out of her bank manager father (Herbert Knaup) and get to Manni before he does something desperate.
