From: Chicago a CappellaWe’ve been very busy preparing new programming during these first months of 2023, and we can’t wait to share what we've got in the works this winter: four From Behind Closed Doors concerts, another call for submissions for our HerVoice Emerging Women Composers Competition, continued work on our Hanukkah CD project with Cedille Records, and learning more about mezzo-soprano Sarah Ponder.
Upcoming Concerts
From Feb. 18 to Mar. 5, we're looking forward to sharing with you a unique program of beautifully moving works that were previously held back unjustly due to personal reasons, societal norms, or inequity, and to open the doors for new works to step into the spotlight. We'll be exploring works spanning four centuries, with music by Byrd, Howells, Price, and Garrop, and examining the circumstances that nearly prevented so many musical treasures from being performed publicly. We'll also premiere three new pieces, made possible through the HerVoice Emerging Women Composers Competition. Check out the song list and program notes online, follow us on Facebook or Instagram where we'll be featuring the many fascinating stories behind the program, and get your tickets to experience it live.
Submissions Sought For Hervoice Competition
We're excited to announce that our HerVoice Emerging Women Composers Competition is back for a third year! We are now accepting submissions for the competition, where winners will be selected to receive mentoring from composers Stacy Garrop and Zanaida Robles, receive a workshop and performance of their piece by either Chicago a cappella or partner organization Vancouver Youth Choir, and receive a $500 cash prize. The deadline to submit is April 1, 2023.
Hanukkah CD Project Update
Last week, we wrapped recording for our Hanukkah CD project on Cedille Records, getting us one step closer to making its long-awaited release a reality! We need to raise a total of $21,000 to fully fund this project. To date, we have raised just over $10,000 of that $21,000. Please consider making a gift today to help us preserve a recorded legacy of Jewish music by living composers and exponentially expand the reach of our ensemble to listeners worldwide.
Get To Know Sarah Ponder
Rehearsals for From Behind Closed Doors have started and we asked our incredible mezzo-soprano, Sarah Ponder, to share what it's like managing a wide range of repertoire and her first-hand experience of working closely with our HerVoice composers. Get to know Sarah in this short interview and then buy tickets to hear her sing at our February and March concerts!
