5th Annual Women In Film Festival

Arts and Entertainment

September 27, 2023

From: Women In Film Festival

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is proud to present its 5th annual Women In Film Festival (WIFF). WIFF is a celebration of women as filmmakers: in front of and behind the camera. This festival will feature stories that have not been told from a woman’s perspective.

Although women make up over half the country’s population, only 7 percent of film directors are female. Women make up a minority of film producers, composers, editors, and writers. WIFF will shed light on the females story-tellers who have been under-represented.

On the big screen, WIFF will feature films with powerful women who break the mold of traditional female characters. Films will honor women who are trailblazers in the industry, promoting their achievements.

WIFF seeks to empower moviegoers through screenings and authentic panels that will turn the spotlight onto females in the industry. The festival will include a diverse selection of films and speakers in an effort to bring visibility to distinct perspectives.

Schedule

7:00 pm  : Joan Baez I Am A Noise

Joan Baez I Am A Noise is an unusually intimate psychological portrait of legendary folk singer and activist Joan Baez. Neither a conventional biopic nor a traditional concert film, this immersive documentary shifts back and forth through time as it follows Joan on her final tour and delves into her extraordinary archive, including newly discovered home movies, diaries, artwork, therapy tapes, and audio recordings. Throughout the film, Baez is remarkably revealing about her life on and off stage -from her lifelong emotional struggles to her civil rights work with MLK and a heartbreaking romance with a young Bob Dylan. A searingly honest look at a living legend, this film is a compelling and deeply personal exploration of an iconic artist who has never told the full truth of her life, as she experienced it, until now.

7:30 pm  : Isle Of Hope

Victoria (Mary-Stuart Masterson) is a university professor who has a grudge with her self-absorbed mother, the well-known actress, Carmen Crawford (Diane Ladd), for crushing her dreams of becoming a playwright. But when Carmen suffers a life-threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she is living 15 years in the past, Victoria is given a unique opportunity to figure out where her life went off track and start fresh with her mother. Damian Romay’s poignant film celebrates second chances and deep familial love.
