Remembering Marita Carroll

Eastport Resident & Local Civil Rights Activist

In honor of Women's History Month, we remember Marita Carroll, a longtime Eastport resident, educator, and Civil Rights activist. Marita was born in Eastport in November 2, 1921. She attended Bowie State and earned a teacher certification. Marita taught in Anne Arundel County Public Schools for several decades and was one of the first African American teachers at the newly integrated Eastport Elementary School. She was a champion for equality and recognized as a member of the Annapolis Five during the Civil Rights movement, a group of Annapolis citizens that held a demonstration at the Terminal Restaurant in 1960 protesting segregation in Annapolis. Marita passed away peacefully on October 26, 2013.

To learn more about Marita, you can read the transcription of her oral history interview conducted by Michael Miron in the AMM archives, home to the Michael F. Miron Oral Histories collection.
