Each day, musicians will spend time with their ensemble receiving coaching from our professional ACMF musicians. Activities may also include individual one-on-one work with a coach, group work to develop and refine skills needed by small ensemble musicians, and more!
The weekend will conclude with an invited concert for family and friends.

Participants will perform pieces in an all-camp chamber orchestra and in smaller chamber music groups. To start off our first weekend of ACMF 2024, we’re returning to one of our favorite intimate venues, the Shepherdstown Train Station for a celebration of our ACMF artists’ solo voices and one of the most inspiring composers through the centuries to all types of musicians from Beethoven to Brubeck, J.S. Bach.
Chamber music at ACMF highlights our conversations with each other and that energy we share with you the audience, but on this unique occasion, you will have the opportunity to hear ACMF artists using their own solo voices.
Program: to include solo movements of Bach Partitas, Sonatas and Suites, as well as some works inspired by Bach, performed by our amazing roster of ACMF artists. Program will be announced from the stage.

7:00 PM: Finding a New Voice

ACMF is delighted to be returning to the Barns of Rose Hill for the opening night of ACMF 2024 in a moving program of the all-time great composers stretching their new found voices.
Our ACMF artists perform works by Mozart and Brahms using unprecedented instrument pairings of cello, viola and clarinet to create new sound worlds. We’ll hear Mahler’s early Piano Quartet from the beginning of his compositional career before he became the great symphonist of the early 20th century and Jessie Montgomery’s profound pandemic-era work “Peace”.

Imagine a summer afternoon filled with the vibrant sounds of jazz and the powerful echoes of history. The Appalachian Chamber Music Festival and the National Park Service invite you to a free concert unlike any other, celebrating the legacy of the Niagara Movement.
This concert celebrates the groundbreaking organization that paved the way for the NAACP. The Niagara Movement held its meetings at the historic Storer College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where this performance takes place.
The afternoon unfolds with a captivating program that bridges past and present. The renowned Howard Burns Quartet brings the vibrant energy of jazz to the stage, a genre that owes much to the fight for equality championed by the Niagara Movement. Featuring works by Storer College graduate and early 20th century musician, Don Redman.
The second half of the program highlights the world premiere of a new chamber work about the Niagara movement by Rufus Reid, living jazz legend and Don Redman Award winner. A true innovator, Reid's composition promises to be a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of the Niagara Movement's vision.

This year's Appalachian Chamber Music Festival embraces the theme of "Our Different Voices" with a groundbreaking concert titled "Revolutionary Voices." Building upon the success of last year's performance, the festival continues its artistic partnership with acclaimed Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate. His work, "Pisachi," takes center stage. The evocative title, meaning “Reveal”, derived from the Chickasaw language, hints at the program's exploration of the power and diversity of musical expression.

The evening opens with the playful energy of Strauss's "Capriccio," a piece shimmering with a youthful vibrancy. The delicate intimacy of "Morgen", “Zueignung” and “Allerseelen" also by Strauss, whisper with a touch of longing and represent some of the different seasons in life.
Prepare to be swept away by the powerful emotions of Max Bruch's Octet. This monumental work explores a kaleidoscope of human experience, just as the changing seasons bring a rich harvest of emotions. This innovative program features Vivaldi's iconic masterpiece interwoven with the passionate tango-infused compositions of Astor Piazzolla, also known for his own Four Seasons. Hear these familiar pieces reimagined in a captivating chamber music setting.

Prepare to be swept away by the monumental beauty of Max Bruch's Octet. This virtuosic masterpiece showcases the talents of eight exceptional musicians. This performance also features the second performance of Rufus Reid’s commissioned work celebrating the Niagara movement, a pivotal group in the fight for African American civil rights which held its meetings in Harpers Ferry.
Highlighting the ensemble's versatility and expressivity, we’ll hear Astor Piazzolla's captivating "Four Seasons"; a passionate reimagining of Vivaldi's classic masterpiece through the lens of tango.
