It’s early winter, and this month can be the coldest and hardest on animals and plants. Many are hibernating or have gone dormant until spring. Birds are still active and many different species come together in winter flocks that move through the nature sanctuary. These birds can be observed from our warm and cozy Birdwatching Room at the Nature Center. Snowfall turns woodland and prairie into enchanted places; try exploring the trails in farm pastures on your cross-country skis or snowshoes.

Geo Gnomes at Aullwood (Everyone)
Ten very special Geo Gnomes are calling Aullwood home from January 2 to February 29. You’re invited to visit Aullwood to find all ten and guess their true home state! The gnomes can be found at the Center, Farm, and in a few places in the nature sanctuary. Grab a Gnome Clue Sheet at the Center or Farm front desk for help find these winter visitors and how to determine which state they hail from. Each gnome is decorated with clues such as their state bird, state flower, state mammal or something special the state is known for. Write your answers on the Gnome Raffle Ticket and enter a drawing to win a year-long Friends of Aullwood family membership (or renewal) or to win the Ohio gnome to relocate to your home! The first 50 families to complete the Geo Gnome Hunt will receive a hand-made mini-gnome to take home. Boxes for the drawings will be located at the Farm & Center front desks. One submission per family per visit. Members of Aullwood, National Audubon Society and ANCA affiliated organizations can search for Geo Gnomes at no cost; nonmembers pay regular Aullwood general admission fees, which are free for children 3 and under, $8.00 for children 4 to 12, $12.00 for adults 13 to 64, and $10.00 for seniors age 65 and over, active duty military members and veterans with military ID.
