Inside the Power Struggle Between California Politicians and Judges on Homelessness
In the face of a deteriorating homelessness crisis, California politicians have been unable to make substantive progress. The conflict has shifted to a new arena beyond their control: courtrooms. Several court rulings in California and elsewhere have made it more difficult for cities to remove encampments from their streets. Although the state and local governments have invested billions of dollars in getting people inside, over 100,000 Californians remain homeless.
Homelessness remains a contentious issue between legislators and advocates for people without housing. On the one hand, legislators believe that the courts are preventing them from clearing out encampments and disrupting city life. Conversely, advocates claim that lawmakers disregard the constitutional rights of people with nowhere to go.
As the problem worsens, different ballot measures will emerge to decide the legal fate of homelessness, ultimately falling to the voters. To read more, click here.
