From the reverent Orthodox feast on Christmas Eve, to secular Soviet New Year celebrations, Russia is the place to be during the holidays! Merriments include religious ceremonies, children’s parties and recitals, masquerades, caroling, and spectacular decorations. Using images from the Museum of Russian’s Icons collection, the presentation will examine Orthodox images of the Nativity from art historical and theological standpoints, and how they compare with those of western Christianity. We will also explore the history of the Christmas (or Yolka) tree, the origins of Saint Nicholas, and distinctly Russian characters like Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden. Registration required; join us in the library or watch online via Zoom.

Examine December's art exhibit, meet artist Lizzie Abelson, and enjoy refreshments. A New England native, Lizzie studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and spent a year in Rome with RISD's European Honors Program. After college, she enjoyed a brief stint as a freelance illustrator for The New Yorker. Her marginally wild landscapes evoke a sense of moody nostalgia -- unkempt fields over tidy lawns, leafless branches over summer's foliage, silence over noise.
