This month, see a documentary, connect with the Hollywatts Posse, and get back to the land. CAAM Cinema series continues with a screening of Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story, a film about the oldest Black boarding school in Mississippi, paired with live music from the film’s score. Performance group, Hollywatts Posse, reunites for a sold-out performance at Art + Practice. Artist Hana Ward and social historian Bethel Moges discuss George Washington Carver, his influence on Black farming, and its representation in contemporary art.

Join us for a night of cinema and live music alongside filmmaker J.J. Anderson and film composer Adrian Dunn. Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story is a documentary film set against the historical backdrop of one of America’s oldest Black boarding schools in rural Mississippi.

Zine Workshop: George Washington Carver
Create a zine with educators from Able ARTS Work—a nonprofit offering opportunities in the creative arts for people of all abilities—to celebrate the exhibition World Without End: The George Washington Carver Project. This exhibition is among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of PST ART. PST ART: Art & Science Collide, the latest edition of this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty. Over the course of the 1980s and 1990s, the Hollywatts Posse was at the forefront of Los Angeles’s experimental performing arts scene. Join us as this group of interdisciplinary artists—composed of Mark Broyard, Ben Caldwell, Wesley Groves, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Vernon “King Oji” Vanoy—comes back together with a special multimedia performance centering Black history and struggle. Presented in conjunction with KAOS Theory: The Afrokosmic Media Arts of Ben Caldwell, on view at Art + Practice through March 8, 2025.
