Celebrating Black History Month

In case you missed it: the City of American Canyon recognized February as Black History Month at the February 7, 2023 City Council meeting. The proclamation was accepted by longtime community member and Juneteenth event organizer, Brenda Knight.

Brenda Knight is the founder of Ladies in Red, a women’s empowerment group that provides motivation, education and inspiration to African American Women. She made history by becoming the first African American woman to be elected as Chairman of the Board for the Association of Community Colleges Trustees, the national organization for community colleges. She has also been featured in Black Issues in Higher Education, Essence and Black Enterprise magazines.

“I have lived in American Canyon for 20 years. As we celebrate Black History Month on my 20th year, I reflect on the diversity and support our community offers. We stand together, we work together, and we come together when there are issues to be discussed. I am a proud resident to live, work and play in the community I have chosen to call home. I have a responsibility to do more because I can, and next year I plan to celebrate more because I must. Thank you to the City Council for the proclamation. I am honored to receive it.” – Brenda Knight
