City Of American Canyon Manager's Update - January 13, 2023

January 13, 2023

Happy New Year, American Canyon!

I hope you are staying safe and warm as the wet weather is expected to continue this weekend. All things considered, American Canyon has fared well so far in 2023 and we are blessed to have eluded the heart-breaking calamities afflicting other Californians. City staff are responding to storm impacts around the clock and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication.

As you know, some of the most vulnerable infrastructure is outside the City’s responsibility. For example, the power outage last Sunday morning was caused by downed power poles and wires. Fortunately, hardworking PG&E staff fixed the situation within about 14 hours. Please refer to the PG&E Outage Map for the latest information.

As we saw again last Monday morning, state highway 29 is prone to flooding. Fortunately, Caltrans staff responded quickly and were able to fix the problem within about 7 hours. In the meantime, the City’s new Devlin Road helped keep commuters flowing (albeit slowly). Nevertheless, other state highways remain impacted. Please refer to the Caltrans QuickMap for the latest information.

The weekend forecast calls for heavy rain Saturday through Monday. Additional power outages, downed trees and flooding is likely. The City is offering a 24/7 self-serve sandbag station at City Hall (4381 Broadway, near the entrance by the tree & picnic table). We simply ask that you bring your own shovel and gloves. Also, the rain is causing new potholes to spring up on roads everywhere. We’ve managed to patch some, but please be careful when driving. Please check on your neighbors and visit American Canyon’s Virtual City Hall for the latest information.

Lastly, some of you know I grew up in Colorado. Well, this season, my football team was “Irrelevant”. However, the Niners did “Purdy” well and they will host their insufferable rivals from the northwest in a playoff game on Saturday afternoon (during a monsoon). That game is sure to be a mud bath spectacle. This will be a perfect weekend to hunker down inside and watch all the action—please stay safe and off the roads as much as possible.

Thank you and take care.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This coming Monday, we take a moment to recognize Martin Luther King Jr.—a civil rights legend and icon in our American history. His campaign for racial justice forever shaped our nation.

Last year, Napa Valley Unified School District Staff, along with many American Canyon community members, recited Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream Speech." We invite you to watch the video as you reflect this weekend.

Important Notices

As stormy weather continues across the region, follow the tips above to be prepared and stay safe.

We encourage you to prepare for potential flooding and power outages. A self-serve sandbag station is located at City Hall (4381 Broadway, near the entrance by the tree & picnic table) and is available 24/7 during the winter season. Sand and sandbags are provided; users will need to bring their gloves and shovels.

PG&E customers can view real-time outage information on its website outage center and also sign up for outage notifications.

Please remember to slow down, turn on your headlights, use your windshield wipers, and maintain a distance of several car lengths between your car and other vehicles.
If you see downed wires or a hazardous situation, call 911 immediately. All other problems, such as clogged storm drains and downed trees, may be reported by calling (707) 995-8674.
