No Burn Day in Cape Girardeau today (11/16/22)

We are in a burn advisory status and ask that you continue to monitor cityofcape.org/fire on any day you intend to burn. Conditions are favorable for fire to spread and we anticipate it to remain this way for the foreseeable future. Before burning in Cape Girardeau, please make sure conditions are such that burning is not a public safety hazard. The Fire Department website is always up-to-date, or you can call the Fire Department Headquarters at 573-339-6330. Other burning-related laws and regulations are listed on our site for your reference.

Our partner, Alliance Water Resources, helps us get 38 MILLION gallons of clean water to Cape every week. They maintain our 319 miles of water main pipes, seven wells, and other infrastructure. Thank you for their everyday work and especially for any time they work overnight, in inclement weather, and away from their families to keep this critical resource flowing to all of Cape Girardeau! Small Business Saturday

This shop small movement helps to raise awareness of the importance of shopping locally. Old Town Cape staff and volunteers will be out and about downtown throughout the day encouraging others to shop locally. Shoppers will have several opportunities to receive Shop Small merchandise including a limited number of 2022 Small Business Saturday totes, stickers, and more.

Leaf piles must be kept free of limbs and other debris to avoid damaging the equipment.  Detailed information on the current year's program can be found in our Leaf Season Brochure. Route 3 begins Nov. 18 near the center of town north of Kingshighway & Cape Rock, and south of Lexington and Perryville (see map). Unscheduled routes will begin again in January, serving each property at least once by end of March.

Other Leaf Disposal Options
Haul Your Leaves: A container will be available at the recycling center for leaf drop-off. The recycling center is located at 2007 Southern Expressway beside Public Works. It is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The Recycling Center is available free to City residents only.
Mulch: Residents can mulch their existing leaves into their lawn by simply mowing over them. This is the most environmentally friendly option and releases nutrients back into the soil.
Compost Bags: Bags are available at Utility Billing, Schnucks, and Food Giant. The bags are sold for $7.10 for a bundle of five. Call Public Works to schedule to have the bags picked up. This service is available year-round.
