How do I register to vote?

In order to register to vote in Cape Girardeau County, residents must complete a voter registration application. This can be done online, by mail, or in-person. Registration can be completed at 17 1/2 years of age, but must be 18 years of age before being eligible to vote.

What is the deadline to register to vote?

If you are registered in the state of Missouri, your active registration can be moved at any time. If you are not registered, you must complete a new voter registration application prior to the registration deadline which is 5:00 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday prior to the election date. You can register to vote by submitting a new voter registration application online, by mail, or in-person (see above). If you move within Cape Girardeau County, you are permitted to change your registration address any time up to or on Election Day. *Any registrations moved from one Missouri county to another on day of the election must be done in person at the offices of the County Clerk*

Lexington Repair Forthcoming,
TTF6 Street Improvements

Lexington Avenue from Carolina Lane to Sherwood Drive and Lexington Avenue from West Cape Rock Drive to Sprigg Street will be renovated in 2023, possibly carrying over into the 2024 construction season.  The Sprigg and Bertling Street projects will be completed in 2024 and 2025.  If funding is available in 2024, the City might be able to move forward with both Sprigg and Bertling for the 2024 construction season. Nominations for 2023 Endangered Buildings List

The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission is still accepting nominations for its 2023 Endangered Buildings List.  The Commission first introduced the list in 2012 to promote awareness of buildings and structures in the community that, in the opinion of the Commission, have historic value and are believed to be at risk of being lost due to significant deterioration and/or imminent demolition. To obtain a nomination form, visit cityofcape.org/HPC or stop by the Planning Services Division at City Hall.  Completed nomination forms may be submitted by email to [email protected], or by mail to: Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission, 44 North Lorimier Street, Cape Girardeau, Missouri 63701.  Nominations must include all of the following: 1) the building address or, if there is no address, an adequate description of the location; 2) an explanation of the building’s historic significance; 3) an explanation of why the building is endangered; 4) suggested actions that could be taken to save the building; and 5) at least one photo of the building in its current condition (PDF, JPEG or TIFF format only for electronic submissions).
 
The deadline for submitting a nomination is March 10, 2023.  The Commission will review the nominations on March 22, 2023 and adopt the list on April 19, 2023.  Both meetings are open to the public and will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 44 North Lorimier Street (subject to change).

Proposed Recreational Marijuana Tax

Voters to decide April 4, 2023 on a 3% sales tax on recreational marijuana
 

Shall the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, impose a sales
tax in the amount of three percent (3%) on all tangible
personal property retail sales of adult use marijuana sold
in the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri?

Missouri voters passed Amendment 3 to legalize recreational marijuana, and to give voters the option to tax the sales at 3%. Many other communities are also planning to put the tax on the April ballot.

-Only recreational marijuana shoppers would pay the tax

-Additional revenue is estimated to start at $153,660/year

-The money will be used for priorities set by the community and City Council in the General Fund supporting police, fire, streets, parks, and other services. Up to 25% could be earmarked each year for mental health and drug treatment and prevention, coordinated by the Police Department.
