CHANDLER, Ariz. –  The City of Chandler was recognized as one of the top ten Digital Cities Survey award recipients by the Center for Digital Government (CDG). The annual survey recognizes cities using technology to tackle social challenges, enhance services, strengthen cybersecurity and more. Chandler tied for sixth place in the category for cities with a population of 250,000-499,999. Chandler’s population was estimated at 283,993 as of Nov. 1, 2022.

Chandler has a long-held commitment to innovation and technology, and looks for opportunities for smart, sustainable solutions and innovative ideas that promote efficiency, productivity and connectivity.

Some of the highlights of Chandler’s top ranking include coming up with unique ways to address some of the challenges facing many organizations — limited staffing. Chandler was able to increase its use of contract employees, from seven before the pandemic to more than 21 this year, resulting in the completion of several projects ahead of schedule. A few of the projects included adding text and video to 9-1-1 capabilities, implementing a web-based live chat option with the City Courts and a pilot test of a blockchain voting app for a mock municipal election. The City has also pushed the envelope on cybersecurity, becoming a local government pioneer in using StateRAMP (State Risk and Authorization Management Program) to authorize cloud service vendors, similar to the process used in the federal government

Another highlight recognized the action of staff to respond to an unexpected closure of a popular City library branch. An explosion caused by a gas leak at a nearby business resulted in significant damage to the City’s Sunset Library. While the building was closed for repairs, staff set up checkout kiosks and brought back a reservation system that was used during the pandemic to allow patrons to maintain access to library materials.

“It is such an honor for Chandler, the Community of Innovation, to be recognized again for the City's efforts to advance its digital environment,” said City of Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. “Our staff works tirelessly to improve, enhance or streamline processes that directly benefit community members. This year's award is especially meaningful, as it also recognizes staff who responded to adversity by quickly pivoting to ensure the community could still access library materials during the months of rehabilitation to the Sunset Library.”
