Government and Politics

March 10, 2023

From: City Of Hercules

The National Weather Service has instated a Wind Advisory and Flood Watch for the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • The Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 PM Thursday, 3/9, through 4 PM Friday, 3/10.
  • The Flood Watch is issued from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

Thursday night will potentially collect between 1 and 2 inches of new rainfall, with that number anticipated to decrease throughout the weekend. Friday through Sunday will potentially gain amounts of rain between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, respectively.

Sandbags

Sandbags will be available to Hercules residents at two locations within the City. The sandbags are available at:

  • City Hall (111 Civic Drive) adjacent to the trailer
  • Community Center (2001 Refugio Rd.) in the back corner of the parking lot

The stations will be open for 24 hours daily throughout the storm. The sandbags are self-service, meaning residents must fill their own bags.

For more information, contact the Public Works Department at (510) 799-8244.

Safe Driving

Driving through a flooded or highly windy region puts your safety at risk. Be aware that flooded regions could potentially make a driver stuck in the water due to an inability to perceive the depth of standing water or water stalling the car. Severe winds can cause distracted driving and leave hazards in the path of a vehicle.

If you are driving through a rainy area and your vehicle begins to hydroplane, you should remove your foot from the gas. Rather than pressing the brakes, your vehicle will gradually slow until control can be gained again. Other safety procedures include giving you extra distance between your vehicle and the driver in front of you and using your headlights when your windshield wipers, regardless of the time of day.
