City of Marina Announcing The Marina 2045 General Plan Update

Government and Politics

February 11, 2023

From: City of Marina

On January 25th, the Marina City Council and the Community Development Department kicked off the Marina 2045 General Plan Update. Updating the General Plan is essential to ensure that we successfully plan for our future. In coming months, we will look to build partnerships between the city and community members via workshops, stakeholder meetings, and pop-up events, with a goal of capturing a comprehensive vision for Marina over the next few decades. We look forward to engaging with our diverse residents and hearing everyone's concerns, ideas, and thoughts about our city!

If you missed the Council and Planning Commission Study Session on January 25th, you can watch the entire meeting video here or view the PowerPoint presentation here. The Mayor led a robust discussion of the City's strengths, issues, and opportunities.

Are you interested in helping to shape the future of Marina?

The General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) will be a key sounding board for vetting proposed high-level project direction. We're looking for fresh voices to join the GPAC and help the City come up with great ideas for Marina. If you're interested in future land use, mobility, the environment, and helping create an identity for our town, you might want to check out the GPAC.

Submit an application to join the GPAC! The deadline to apply is Wednesday, February 15th.

What is a General Plan and Why Update it?

The City of Marina General Plan is an important policy document that must be updated in all charter cities every 15 to 20 years per California State Law (the last full update to ours was in 2000). The General Plan serves as the City’s roadmap for land use and development decisions and is a key tool for influencing and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses. Our update will explore important community concerns such new growth, housing needs, parks, and environmental protections.

The two-year project schedule includes the following steps:

Discovery where we explore and identify issues and opportunities;
Visioning to develop a long-term vision and guiding principles;
Alternatives to create options for the location and pattern of growth;
Policy Development to develop policy solutions to a range of topics, including sustainability, social equity, and economic development;
Plan Development where the General Plan, Environmental Impact Report, and Zoning Code will be drafted; and
Review and Adoption for the public and City decision-makers to review and adopt the General Plan, EIR, and Zoning Code.
