What a year! Thank you to all of our community members who read this newsletter, attended community events, shared our posts and more in 2022. We are so thankful for our community! Let's take a trip down memory lane together and reminisce on all the fun we had this year!
This year, Shawnee was the proud home to several hearts in the Kansas City area's "Parade of Hearts" display. The community loved the "All In It Together" heart in front of City Hall so much that we decided to make it a permanent display! If you haven't had a chance to already, go check out just how much "heart" we have right in front of City Hall at 11110 Johnson Drive.
Our second year of Moonlight Market was a smashing success! We had a great time celebrating every third Thursday from May to November with food trucks, live music, over 70 local vendors, games and more! We are excited to bring Moonlight Market back for the third year in 2023!
We had a blast at Old Shawnee Days this year! From the parade to the rides to the live music to the carnival food...we just couldn't get enough! Thank you to all who came out and kicked off their summer fun with us. We can't wait to spend a few toasty days together next summer!
We are excited to share that the Fire Station Project has broken ground and is underway! Chief Rick Potter, Mayor Michelle Distler, and other Councilmembers and City staff gathered on December 21 for a groundbreaking ceremony! We are excited to update Fire Stations 71 and 73 over the next two years. For project updates, visit cityofshawnee.org/FireStationProject.
In 2022, the City of Shawnee officially became a Community of Excellence. We are proud to have achieved accreditation in four departments and have reached milestones that all City employees can be proud of. In October, we celebrated these accomplishments with a Community of Excellence breakfast to thank staff for all their hard work!
All City offices will be closed on Monday, January 2, 2023 in observance of New Year's Day. Please handle any in-person City business by Friday, December 30, 2022. You can access many of our services online at cityofshawnee.org no matter the day or time! City offices will reopen on Tuesday, January 3.
You have until December 31 to donate to the Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund! This year, Mayor Distler chose Shawnee Community Services and Mercy and Truth Medical Missions as recipients! There are several ways you can help out including online donations, bluebird box dedication plaques, and purchasing a Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund candle, shirt, holiday card or ornament at the Shawnee Town 1929 Gift Shop. For full information, including details on how to make an in-person donation, visit cityofshawnee.org/mctf!
