City of Stamford From the Mayor's Desk: December 9 2022

Government and Politics

December 12, 2022

From: City of Stamford

My team and I were honored to welcome the UK government His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for North America and the British Consulate General in New York, Emma Wade-Smith, to Stamford this week. We spent the day introducing HMTC Wade-Smith and her team to statewide stakeholders like AdvanceCT and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, as well as leaders from businesses who decided to relocate to Stamford, like ITV America and Mirador, Inc.

There is no shortage of areas of alignment between the City of Stamford and the United Kingdom and 22,000 Connecticut jobs are impacted by companies that reside throughout the state. The UK is also Connecticut’s largest export market.

Through the Global Stamford Initiative, I look forward to continuing to meet and partner with international stakeholders to see how we can move forward on mutually beneficial economic development priorities and projects.

One Year Report

A little over one year ago, I had the privilege of being sworn in as the Mayor of Stamford. On my first day, I outlined a vision to continue to build a City that is equitable, inclusive, innovative, and a place where everyone can thrive. As I reflect on the tremendous work and effort from our first year in office, I want to again thank you for trusting me to lead our City. I cannot wait to see what we accomplish together in the next three years. I hope you will take the time to read more about what we have accomplished this year by reading our Year One Report or watching the video below!

Mayor's Business Advisory Council

This week, I hosted the second Mayor’s Business Advisory Council meeting where executives and community leaders came together to discuss economic development priorities for the City, including business retention, business attraction, and workforce development.

The meeting is an opportunity for the City’s largest employers to share insights and updates with myself and my Economic Development team.

I was also excited to announce that Brent Montgomery, CEO and Founder of Wheelhouse Entertainment, will Chair the Advisory Council moving forward. Brent has continued to promote Stamford through his work in creating the Village, a vibrant coworking space, which now is the home to major tenants like ITV America.

Statement on Recent Fatal Motor Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Collision

Earlier this week, our community experienced a devastating tragedy when Giovani Vega Benis and Yuliana Arias Lozano lost their lives while crossing the intersection at Washington Boulevard and Main Street. I send my deepest condolences to Giovani and Yuliana's families and my thoughts and prayers are with their friends and family during this difficult time. I want to assure the families that the City, the Stamford Police Department, and my administration will do everything we can to support you during this difficult time, ensure that justice is served, and tragedies like this never happen again.

Captain Conklin Promotion Ceremony

It was an honor to swear-in Captain Richard Conklin as the next Assistant Chief of Police for the Stamford Police Department CT.

Assistant Chief Conklin is a 42-year veteran of the Stamford Police Department, serving our City for decades with excellence and a commitment to serving and protecting the residents of our community. He has also been a leader and recognized statewide for investigating and solving some of the most serious crimes.

We are fortunate to have him in this new role and wish him the best of luck. Congratulations to the entire Conklin family on this incredible achievement!

Thank you to Stamford Downtown, the Stamford Police and Fire Departments, CERT teams, and all the volunteers who made this year’s Heights & Lights last weekend a success! It’s always a wonderful event to help kickstart the holiday season.
