This month's editor's note is dedicated to the veterans and service members that were submitted by Warson Woods residents following our request in the last newsletter.

We are grateful for the service and the example these individuals set for each of us to live every day in service to our country and our community. Our community stands in gratitude to each of these individuals and their families for their sacrifice.

How to Host a Block Party 

Block parties are fun, community building events for all ages, no Uber required! Here are a few tips for hosting a successful gathering:

1. Fill out a sawhorse request form from City Hall to block off the street. You'll need to get signatures from everyone within the closed off area, so do it well in advance of your party! Bruce will even come set them up for you on the day of your event. You are responsible for taking them down - don't forget as you wind down the evening so overnight traffic can get through. He will come pick them up from your yard the next business day.
2. Not required, but we've always rented a port-a-potty and placed it in the driveway, so our bathroom doesn't smell like a truck stop.
3. Pro Tip: Put a large cooler of ice water and cups out - kids get super thirsty running around and we've found plenty a crystal stemware under the swing set from little ones riffling around my kitchen.
4. Place plenty of trash cans and recycle bins around the party area, and make sure all trash is picked up out of the street by the next day. I make my kids do it - it's their favorite! (not)
5. Invite the officer on duty to stop by for a snack - they love fun night shift activities, and you'll look super cool in front of your guests to have cop friends.
6. Be respectful of neighbors not attending the party - manage the noise level. Remember - the quieter you are, the longer you can party! PRO TIP: Invite everyone you know who might complain.
7. Properly extinguish all fire pit fires - even if a fire looks like it's out the embers can remain hot and shouldn't be put in, oh, say a yard waste bin, for example. You know who you are.

Yard Waste Reminders

Some helpful reminders about the Warson Woods yard waste policies:

1. From now until December 15, Waste Connections provides TWICE weekly yard waste pickups. The additional pickup day for all four wards is on Saturday.
2. Use a 30-gallon paper bag or trash bin for yard waste. Only put in leaves and yard/grass clippings. If you have longer sticks/branches/limbs, fashion the items into bundles that are no more than 4 feet long and no more than 40 pounds each.
3. Each resident is allowed up to 300 gallons of yard waste per pick up (this equates to about 10 bags).
4. If you've followed the guidelines and for some reason your waste is not picked up, please call Waste Connections at (636) 321-2100 and they should come back and get it.
5. Per our contract, Waste Connections should only be picking up waste between the hours of 7am - 5pm. If you notice pickups significantly outside this window, please call them at (636) 321-2100 to report it, or any other unsafe driving behavior.

Also, remember to dispose of your yard waste properly. Please rake your leaves into approved yard waste containers or bags and place on the curb. While Warson Woods does not provide the service, there are several companies who offer leaf vacuuming services throughout the season.

As a reminder, leaves or other yard waste should NEVER be disposed of in the creek. The leaves can break down and clog the drain, creating a catalyst for flooding.

From the City Code - the following are declared to be nuisances affecting health:

15. Any and all discharges, either directly or indirectly, into a storm water system of any waste materials, liquids, vapor, fat, gasoline, benzene, naphtha, oil or petroleum product, mud, straw, lawn clippings, tree limbs or branches, metal or plastic objects, rags, garbage or any other substance which is capable of causing an obstruction to the flow of the storm system or interfere with the proper operation of the system, or which will pollute the natural creeks or waterways.

Section 215.545 Sweeping Litter Into Gutters - Prohibited.

No person shall sweep into, deposit or allow to accumulate in any gutter, street, or other public place within the City litter or yard wastes from any building or lot or from any public or private sidewalk or driveway. Persons owning or occupying property shall keep the sidewalks and gutters in front of their premises free of litter and yard wastes.

Trot Thru The Woods 2022

Registration is open for the 2022 Trot Thru the Woods!

There is still time to sign up for the 2022 Trot Thru the Woods.  This year's race will be held on Saturday, November 19th. Please check out our website at www.runwarsonwoods.com for more information and a registration link. Registration is only $15 through 11/7.  The first 200 registrants in the 5k will receive a Trot Thru the Woods beanie.

The race will start from Royal Oaks Park (900 Warson Woods Drive, 63122). The 5k starts at 8:00 A.M. sharp followed by the fun run at 9:00.

All kid fun run participants will receive an edible cookie medal!

Save the Date: Ladies Ornament Exchange

Warson Woods has long had an annual tradition of a ladies' ornament exchange at a resident's home in early December that all of the adult women in the neighborhood are welcome to attend. Due to COVID, the event took a hiatus, but some committed volunteers are bringing it back this year and we couldn't be more thrilled!

Wild Bird Unlimited's New Kids Craft Club

Many neighbors already love our local Wild Birds Unlimited store, but this month they debuted a new kids craft club on the first Sunday of each month at noon where children can stop by and create a craft in the back of the store. Around 12 kids attended the first event and it was a lovely birdfeeder bagel craft that the kids enjoyed making.

The next craft club event will be on Sunday, December 4th at noon at Wild Birds Unlimited. This is a free offering from the store. More details here.

Internet and Social Media Safety Class

A big thanks to Sergeant Gene for holding a very informative internet and social media safety class this month at city hall!

Spotlight: Warson Woods' Newest Officer - Elijah McGee

When did you become a police officer?
I became a Police Officer on August 19, 1990.

What cities did you serve before coming to Warson Woods?
Kinloch, Hillsdale, Wellston, Bel-ridge and Rock Hill. I served the City of Rock Hill for 23.5 years.

What do you like most about being a police officer?
Helping people - I really enjoy helping children and the elderly.

What drew you to Warson Woods?
It's a very nice community. A community where I could live with my family and feel safe and secure. I also have a great relationship with Chief Stanczak and Officer Fitzgerald.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I really enjoy spending time with my family, which includes my wife, 2 daughters and my grandson.

What is your favorite safety tip?
Always keep your head on a swivel. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. When entering a building for the first time, locate all entrances and exits, just in case you need to leave quickly.
