Science on Tap: Colorado Springs, the American West, and the Total Eclipse of 1878

A special event of the 2023 Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival

Colorado Springs, the American West, and the Total Eclipse of 1878

The upcoming annular eclipse of Oct 14, 2023, and total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, are renewing the excitement felt during the "Great American Eclipse” of 2017.  But almost 150 years ago, when the American West was still wild, hundreds of astronomers and thousands of tourists traveled by train to Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas to witness America's first “Great Eclipse” on July 29, 1878.  Back then, just seven years after Colorado Springs was founded, tourists crowded our streets while astronomers carted a huge telescope to the summit of Pikes Peak.  Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak played an important role in that event, which changed the direction of American astronomy.  Come hear about one of the most exciting scientific events to occur in our city's early history.

Dr. Steve Ruskin is an award-winning historian of astronomy, with a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Notre Dame.  He was a visiting researcher at Cambridge University, England, on a grant from the National Science Foundation.  He is a native of Colorado Springs, and is the author of numerous books of both history and science fiction.

"Science on Tap" presents informal but fascinating science in a relaxed atmosphere, second Monday of each month.  All are welcome.
