-FAMILY BUSINESS PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY INVESTED TO FIND A CURE BY RAISING OVER $3,000 FOR CT CHAPTER-

(CHESHIRE, CONN) – September 2, 2025 – Connecticut ranks in the top 15 for states with an older population.  In fact, according to the 2025 Connecticut Healthy Aging Report, there are 885,046 people 60 years and older living in the state.  Unfortunately, up to 27% of them – or 238,962- currently live with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.  One local family business is making it their mission to find a cure by preserving one memory at a time.  Specifically, Assisted Living Home Care Services, an award-winning senior care agency with over 700 employees in Cheshire, Westport and Putnam, has recently announced that it will earmark all fundraising activities for the year to the Alzheimer’s Association-Connecticut Chapter. Thus far, the company has raised more than $3,000 for the statewide charity, which advocates for the needs and rights of those facing dementia and advances critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and a cure.

My parents started this company nearly thirty years ago due to a lack of qualified caregivers for seniors in Connecticut to tend to my great-grandfather, who had Alzheimer’s disease at the time,” said Mario D’Aquila, MBA, chief operating officer of Assisted Living Home Care Services.  “Since then, this debilitating disease has impacted most of our senior clientele and the personal families of our employees as the number of diagnoses continues to increase each year.  We’re all committed to raising awareness for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts both personally and professionally.”

D'Aquila notes that individual employees have brainstormed and created original fundraising events for the Alzheimer’s Association-Connecticut Chapter since the beginning of the year.  These included a Baby Photo Contest, an ice cream fundraiser and a musical bingo night at a local restaurant.

Additionally, Assisted Living Home Care Services has formed a team of 30 employees to participate in the region’s signature event: the Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Named “The Forget Me Not Fighters”, all team members have been actively securing pledges from family, friends and supporters since early 2025.

Besides its proactive fundraising activities for the nonprofit organization, Assisted Living Home Care Services trains its caregivers to provide services for seniors with memory difficulties, including a special dementia care certification program, an initial orientation that includes three hours of training specifically tailored to Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons diseases, and other forms of dementia, as well as frequent ongoing training throughout the year.

Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over several years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer's lives four to eight years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

“Even though Alzheimer’s disease typically afflicts the elderly, its negative impact affects family members of all ages,” adds D’Aquila. “Whether you’re young or old, it is always an ideal time to pull together and fundraise for this worthy cause.”
