Family-Owned Assisted Living Services Committed To Finding A Cure For Alzheimer’s Disease

Cheshire, CT - According to the 2025 Connecticut Healthy Aging Report, there are 238,962 seniors in the state living with Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive condition that causes memory loss and impairs other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.  Assisted Living Home Care Services, an award-winning eldercare agency in Cheshire, Westport and Putnam, recently participated in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Sunday, September 28, 2025 and raised more than $3,000 for the Connecticut Chapter. The local nonprofit advocates for the needs and rights of those diagnosed with dementia and advances critical research toward treatment, prevention, and a cure.

“Having provided senior care for hundreds of Connecticut families for nearly thirty years, we know that cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is one of the primary concerns for our senior clients and their families,” said Mario D’Aquila, MBA, chief operating officer at Assisted Living Home Care Services. “It is absolutely heart-wrenching to witness the increased diagnoses of this debilitating disease with each passing year and as a company, we present a unified front to raise awareness and find a cure.”

At the start of the year, Assisted Living Home Care Services formed a team of 30 employees to participate in the signature event, which took place at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Named “The Forget Me Not Fighters”, all team members actively secured pledges from family, friends and supporters leading up to the walk date.

The Alzheimer's Association® is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers and individuals, the Association maintains a home office in Chicago, a public policy office in Washington, D.C. and a presence in more than 600 communities across the country.  In the United States alone, nearly 7 million people have Alzheimer’s, and more than 12 million are providing unpaid care. The Association addresses this crisis by providing education and support to the millions who face dementia every day. Its annual Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.

“We are extremely grateful to generous companies like Assisted Living Home Care Services which devotes its time and talent to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” said Caroline Kachmar, Alzheimer’s Association CT Chapter Development Manager. “Their contribution to this year’s walk has certainly made an impact in our efforts to finally find a cure.”

Assisted Living Home Care Services trains its caregivers to provide services for seniors with memory difficulties, including a special dementia care certification program, an initial orientation that includes three hours of training specifically tailored to Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons diseases, and other forms of dementia, as well as frequent ongoing training throughout the year.

Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over several years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer's lives four to eight years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

“We’re always seeking new ways to raise awareness for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts both personally and professionally,” adds D’Aquila. “Our vision is a world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia-related disorders.”
