October 18, 2023

6pm: Linked Poetry - Keith Summey North Charleston Library

Linked Poetry: Traditional and New Approaches is a free poetry workshop for writers of all levels who are looking to collaborate! We will begin with haiku writing exercises and build different styles of linked poems step by step. The workshop will be led by poet and CCSD teacher of the year finalist Natasha Akery and Miho Kinnas, Japanese poet & translator.

October 19, 2023

7pm: Nappy Hour - Stillspace Charleston

Nappy Hour is dedicated to rest. The free event will feature yoga by Zania Ahava and live improvised music by Marcus Amaker and Roger Mindwater. All three artists will also perform poetry. Participants will be encouraged to turn off their phones, be still, and enjoy the immersive experience.

7pm: Amass - Local Works

AMASS: a potluck of film and fellowship amongst poets. Poets are encouraged to bring a dish and gather for an evening to relax and break bread before settling in to screen a selection of poetic films curated by A$iahMae. Please list the ingredients for your dish if you plan to bring one.

October 21, 2023

11am-1pm: Poetry and Pancakes - Daps Breakfast and Imbibe at dapschs

Go to Daps for a Saturday brunch and order a pancake. Some poets will be on hand, with typewriters, to write a custom poem for you. Poets will give each pancake customer a fun questionnaire to fill out. We'll write a poem inspired by the answers.

Pretty sweet, eh?

Poem donations are encouraged. Writing poetry on the spot isn’t easy! Poets: Will Davis, Zoe Harvey-Prioleau, and Marcus Amaker.

6pm - 9pm: Surge - James Island Arts and Cultural Center

Join Free Verse Poets and Surge magazine on a collaborative experience involving a workshop, reading and an open mic. Members of the Surge team will lead a workshop about important environmental issues. Participants will present their work at a reading following the workshop. This event will bring together poets and environmental activist communities through a shared appreciation for creative thinking and problem solving.

October 22, 2023

2pm: Slam - Charleston Gaillard Center

We've partnered with the Charleston Gaillard Education & Community Program to offer a poetry slam for high school students. Come and support the poets! The event is open to the public.

First Place: $450
Second Place: $200
Third Place: $150

Each winning poet will also receive three poetry books.

Each participating poet will have a chance to be published in an anthology of student poems.
