Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset on January 28, 2025, in honor and remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter. This is in conjunction and for the same length of time as a proclamation from President Joe Biden. President Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981. He was the 39th President of the United States.

“President Carter lived a great life marked by service to his country. Volunteering his time to build homes for those in need well into his 90s, President Carter never stopped living his faith through service,” said Governor Reynolds. “His belief in putting God’s love into action has inspired generations of Americans, and Kevin and I are praying for his family during this difficult time.”

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state. The White House has appointed January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
