Governor Healey Nominates Judge Asha White and Attorney Amy Karangekis to Superior Court

Boston - Governor Maura Healey today nominated Judge Asha White and Attorney Amy Karangekis as Associate Justices to the Superior Court. The nominees will now be considered by the Governor’s Council for confirmation.

“Both Judge White and Attorney Karangekis have proven successful in their fields and have shown their respective desires to strengthen our court system,” said Governor Healey. “We’re thankful to the Governor’s Council as they consider these nominees.”

“Over the course of their careers, Judge White and Attorney Karangekis have shown their dedication to justice and the rule of law,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “That's why we’re looking forward to working with the Governor’s Council to confirm their nominations.”   

The Superior Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction for Massachusetts and is committed to delivering high quality justice in a timely and fair manner in accordance with the rule of law. The Court's 82 justices sit in 20 courthouses in all 14 counties. The Superior Court has original jurisdiction in civil actions over $50,000 and in matters where equitable relief is sought. It also has original jurisdiction in actions including labor disputes where injunctive relief is sought, exclusive authority to convene medical malpractice tribunals, appellate jurisdiction over certain administrative proceedings, and may hold sittings for naturalization in any city or town. The Superior Court also has exclusive original jurisdiction of first-degree murder cases and original jurisdiction of all other crimes.

Judge Asha White was appointed as an Associate Justice to the District Court in 2021 and has served as the First Justice of the Woburn District Court since July of 2024.   From 2004 to 2021, he gained vast trial experience working as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney in the Boston Municipal Court, the District Court and the Superior Court.  From 2020-2021, he served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.  Prior to serving on the bench, he also worked as an Assistant Clerk Magistrate of the Dorchester Division of the BMC and as a civil litigator at the city of Boston Law Department.   He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Suffolk University since 2008 where he teaches courses on the criminal justice system and the sociology of law.  Judge White is a former President of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and has been a member of several trial court committees. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law. He resides in Medford. 

Attorney Amy Karangekis has been the Regional Chief of the Western Massachusetts Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office in Springfield since 2018, where she is responsible for the overall supervision, management and direction of the largest regional office of the Attorney General. She has overseen attorneys and staff in both Civil and Criminal Divisions, and has represented the Commonwealth in criminal prosecutions, including human trafficking, organized crime, gaming enforcement, and enterprise and major crimes. Attorney Karangekis previously served as Deputy Regional Chief of the AG's Office, Managing Attorney for the Attorney General's Criminal Bureau in Western Massachusetts, and as an attorney in the Appeals Division handling civil and criminal matters in the Massachusetts state and federal trial and appellate courts.  Prior to joining the Attorney General's Office in 2008, Attorney Karangekis was a contract attorney for law firms in Massachusetts and Maine, assisting firms on civil and criminal cases filed in state and federal courts, and was an Adjunct Professor of Legal Research and Writing at New England School of Law.  Attorney Karangekis served as a law clerk to the Honorable Judith A. Cowin of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the late Honorable J. Harold Flannery of the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University, and a Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law. She resides in Southwick.
