It’s really feeling like autumn now, and for many of Michigan’s 45,000 farms that means it’s harvest season - the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of labor, care, and dedication to grow the food that feeds our families. Too bad the Harris-Biden administration has left Michigan’s backbone ag industry, which generates billions in economic output and employs nearly one million people out to dry.

Just take energy, the Harris-Biden administration’s anti-energy crusade spiked diesel prices to record highs, and diesel is still nearly 50 percent more expensive than it was under President Trump. Given that diesel fuels two-thirds of farm equipment like tractors, combines, and harvesters, it’s a direct hit to farmers’ bottom lines. The ripple effects of higher energy prices on our ag sector go even further: natural gas and diesel are critical for the production of crop inputs like fertilizers, the transportation of farm produce on diesel-powered trucks, and the processing of food products. 

Then there’s regulations. Ratcheting up cumbersome regulations kills two birds with one stone for Democrats, allowing them to appease their radical eco-crowd supporters and make their D.C. bureaucrat pals feel empowered. It’s our farmers who’ve had to pay for this. The Harris-Biden administration’s push to expand Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) regulations, for instance, would force farmers to get bureaucratic sign off before making everyday decisions with land that’s often been in their family for generations.

And if Kamala, a cosponsor of the original Green New Deal that put agriculture in the crosshairs, has her way, WOTUS will be the least of farmers’ worries.

But then again, maybe a few more field offices in rural Michigan will convince our farmers to vote for another four years of this idiocy.

Bottom Line: America can’t grow unless Michigan farmers sow. The only candidate in this race who gets it is President Donald J. Trump.
