Ian has strengthened into a hurricane once more and has shifted eastward over the past few advisories.

Heavy rain remains the greatest concern however impacts from wind gusts and storm surge have increased.

Pay close attention to the weather and take necessary precautions.

Flooding is one of the most concerning hazards of the coming storm. Map Forsyth provides a tool that enables you to check your location for flood zones in Forsyth County. The link to this resource and other online resources can be found at the ReadyForsyth Flooding page

As always, please use reliable weather sources to stay on the top of the current forecast:

Hispanic Heritage Month

There are so many opportunities to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage please see the flyers below.  We look forward to seeing you at multiple of these events!  All are FREE!

The Frontera Project                      Monday, October 3 at 7:00 pm                Pre-Event Begins at 5:30 pm

The Frontera Project is an interactive, bilingual theater experience created and performed by a company of Mexican and US artists. We use theater, music, movement and play to actively engage the audience in a compassionate, often joyous conversation about life at the US/Mexico Border.

The multilingual performance will fuse theater, movement and music, giving the artists and audience an opportunity to engage in a thoughtful conversation about the richness and complexity of life at the U.S./Mexico border. The FREE performance, sponsored by the Kenan Institute for the Arts, will take place at the Reynolds Place Theatre inside the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts on Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Prior to the show, guests can view the Hispanic League’s 30th Anniversary Art Exhibition in the Main Gallery, featuring 15 local artists of Latin American and Hispanic heritage, and have the option to purchase items from food trucks on site beginning at 5:30 pm

Register for FREE tickets to The Frontera Project on the Kenan Institute's website. There is limited seating available, so tickets are needed to reserve your place.

Hispanic League

Receives

Winston Salem Forsyth County School Board's

Hispanic Heritage Award

On Tuesday, September 27 the Hispanic League was honored to receive the Hispanic Heritage Award from the Winston Salem Forsyth County School Board. The Hispanic League has been partnering with our school system since 1996 when we began the Middle School Achievers program.  Now celebrating its 25th Anniversary working with English as Second Language Classes in 10 middle schools, Diane Massas will be our new representative visiting with our schools this school year.

In addition, we have provided 600 scholarships valued at almost $1,500,000 since the year 2000.  The scholarship application opens on Saturday, October 1 and closes on January 13.  This year the Hispanic League provided 46 scholarships. Visit www.HispanicLeague.org for details. And save April 15, 2023 for Spanish Nite!

As part of our collaboration with the school system, we also work with Nareny Martinez to offer the Parent Enrichment Program each Tuesday at 11:00 am.   The purpose is to empower Hispanic/Latino parents to foster and support the education of their children. A complete list of the weekly topics can be found on the Hispanic League's website. Join us each week to hear a new topic discussed at this link: https://www.facebook.com/wsfcsMLs

Scholarship Application Opens  October 1, 2022

The Hispanic League was thrilled to sponsor Estela Juarez from Florida to be our author for the 17th Annual BookMarks Festival this year. Estela is only 13 years old and has written this book about her mother being deported to Mexico.  Learning that her voice can be powerful she has helped her mother to receive a special visa to return to the United States. Autographed copies of her book are still available for sale at the BookMarks Bookstore

We are thrilled to share that as part of the Hispanic League's 30th Anniversary and Hispanic Heritage Month, we are partnering with the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts and the Arts Council for our first Hispanic/ Latino Artist Exhibition!  The "Celebrating Our Legacy, Igniting Our Future" exhibit has 15 Artists from our community with works on display from September 2 - October 29.  Pottery, Paintings, Jewelry, and Arts from all media.
