From: Historic Albany FoundationNominate a Presevation Project or Person for an Award!
One Week until the Deadline!
Do you know someone who deserves to be celebrated? We have SO many different award types, check out the categories below:
- Preservation Merit Award projects are outstanding examples of restoration, rehabilitation, or reuse that inspire other preservation efforts and serve as a model for best practices. Most overcome challenges like vacancy, deterioration, demolition pressure, or financial hardship.
- Preservation Initiative Award projects are commendable preservation efforts. Property owners choose to use historic building materials and techniques to maintain the architectural and historic character of the project.
- The Stewardship Award provides recognition to an organization for continued efforts in maintaining and restoring a historic structure or landscape (e.g. a cemetery, park)
- The Main Street Award gives recognition for downtown or “Main Street” revitalization efforts, encouraging commercial activities in the city core or at key "Main Street" locations.
- Certificates of Recognition acknowledge individuals, organizations, or businesses who have made contributions to local preservation efforts.
- The Sustainable Cities Award celebrates urban planning concepts like building reuse, maintaining/recreating density in downtown, and sustainable/green efforts. These are not restoration projects but are in line with preservation ideals and Historic Albany’s advocacy efforts.
- The Katherine Onufer Young Preservationist Award recognizes the efforts of a person 40 or younger who has made a substantial impact on the community and preservation in Albany in general.
- The Architectural Parts Warehouse Award recognizes an individual who is dedicated to reusing salvaged architectural parts in restoration and reuse projects from our Historic Albany Parts Warehouse

A Civil War Presentation of Albany Rural Cemetery
Sunday, June 4th
Join 20 other volunteers in the sunshine!
One of the first rural cemeteries established in the United States, the historic Albany Rural Cemetery was founded in 1841, at a time when the United States contained just 26 states. Today, Albany Rural is comprised of 467 acres and contains more than 130,000 interments.
In this presentation, speaker Mark Bodnar will give a brief history of Albany Rural, then take you on a pictorial journey and virtual tour, of the many of the interesting biographies of the men and women who were influential in the progression of the War of the Rebellion, who are buried in Albany Rural, including the cemetery’s most famous permanent resident, President Chester A. Arthur.
Please feel free to stroll around the grounds after the presentation. This program is held in partnership with Albany Rural Cemetery.
