ADVOCACY UPDATE

As we start to approach the end of the calendar year – those holidays are a slippery slope – I wanted to give an update on the four key areas Historic Albany Foundation has been focusing our time and attention to again this year:

BETTER LEXINGTON
We continue to work with the City of Albany, the West Hill / West End Steering Committee, our neighbors and other neighborhood constituents to make Lexington Avenue a safer and more attractive place to live and work.  Earlier this year, with the assistance of the Code Enforcement Office, DGS and the APD, a code sweep was held on Lexington Avenue.  In addition to physically cleaning up trash and other debris, the most troublesome building at the corner of Lexington and Sherman was shut down and has been boarded up.  Not having this building available to the public has greatly decreased the daytime loitering and other nefarious activities, making that corner much safer and less intimidating to the entire community who comes to our street.  While a boarded up building is certainly not a long term solution, in the short term, it has greatly reduced the issues we were experiencing on nearly a daily basis.  HAF has reached out to the owner of the building to offer any assistance that might be needed.

TOOL LIBRARY
The Tool Library is working as planned!  We currently have over 80 members and tools are being borrowed and returned. Currently, the most popular items being borrowed are the Wet and Dry vacs and the Pressure Washer. In addition, HAF has been offering free How To Workshops sponsored by the Tool Library including Window Restoration, Gardening, Lamp Rewiring, and more. The Tool Library is located within our Architectural Parts Warehouse at 89 Lexington Avenue and is currently open on Wednesdays from 3-6 pm and Saturday mornings from 9 am to Noon. We are thankful to say it is a completely volunteer run.  As the Tool Library grows, we will be looking at borrower statistics to determine the zip codes to begin planning for future Tool Library locations throughout the city.

48 HUDSON AVENUE
HAF just submitted our final construction invoice to the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for the final payout of the first Environmental Protection Fund grant awarded in 2016. To wrap up this grant, we finished exterior masonry work on the east and west sides.  We are excited to be moving along with the restoration of the building. With another Environmental Protection Fund grant awarded last year, we will go out to bid in 2023 for contractors to work on the original 1728 roof and façade with work commencing next summer.  We continue to offer First Friday tours of the building and will be open on Saturday, December 3rd from 10 am to 3 pm for our 3rd Annual Festive at 48 Hudson winter market and open house.
RESTORATION FAIRE  In May of 2022 we focused our annual Restoration Faire on our West Hill Neighborhood and partnered with the City of Albany, the Albany County Land Bank, and others to provide an afternoon of programming in a vacant lot on Lexington Avenue. We had over 100 attendees speak with 21 experts and organizations who shared their knowledge with attendees. In 2023, we will look to do something similar and are currently looking for new and additional partners, as well as sponsors to make the day an even bigger success for our neighborhoods and homeowners.

What's New in the Warehouse?
