From: High Point UniversityHigh Point, NC - High Point University’s Board of Stewards exceeded its goal to raise more than $10,000 this semester to purchase gifts for 100 children through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program.
The Board of Stewards is a student leadership group that shapes the life and witness of the Hayworth Chapel, which serves the HPU campus and the High Point community. Board members shopped for toys, clothes and necessities for the children in the High Point community to receive on Christmas. The Salvation Army provides Christmas gifts to more than 550 children during the holidays, and HPU students contribute to the Angel Tree Program every year.
“It is an absolute joy having the opportunity to play even a small part in the lives of these families during the Christmas season,” said Keira McQuillan, an English major and Presidential Scholar who is president of the Board of Stewards and Chapel Outreach coordinator. “Often it is not just toys that we are going out and shopping for, but it is necessities, such as clothing, winter jackets, shoes and even diapers for infants. It is truly remarkable to be a part of the Board of Stewards, where we come together every fall to raise the funds it takes to sponsor as many children as possible. After all, isn't this the reason for the Christmas season? To display the love of Christ to all.”
HPU Rev. Dr. Preston Davis said it is more than symbolic that the Board of Stewards is supporting one-fifth of the children the Salvation Army of High Point will give gifts to.
“They not only give gifts for these kids. They pray over each child and shop for that child,” said Davis. “It’s a relational form of ministry.”
The Salvation Army of High Point is grateful for HPU students’ commitment to serving the High Point community, said Roger Coulson, a major with the Salvation Army.
“Their efforts will brighten Christmas morning for hundreds of children and provide a sense of relief for parents who are worried about providing a memorable Christmas for their family,” said Coulson. “HPU is truly a beacon of hope in this community.”
