Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2:

Nov. 26 (2 separate programs) - Basketball: Okun Bitty Ball w/Challenger Sports S1 (Ages 4-5 & 6-7)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Sundays, 4 sessions, $63 per person, $70 nonresidents

Get in the game! Practice ball handling, passing, shooting, offense and defense at Okun! Challenger Sports coaches will divide players into teams for drills and scrimmages. Session for ages 4-5, activity number 32487. Session for ages 6-7, activity number 32488.

Nov. 27 - Art: Senior Arts Council (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., 1 to 3 p.m. monthly on the last Monday of each month through November, $25 annual fee, pay at the door

Meet fellow artists and enthusiasts by becoming a member of the Senior Arts Council. Meetings include presentations by a featured artist, workshops, or demonstrations. An invitation for membership is extended for those 55 and older; visitors welcome. Members have the opportunity to display and sell their works at various exhibits. Meetings held the last Monday of the month through November. This group will begin meeting again on Jan. 29.  Activity number 32043.

Nov. 28 - Cards: Bridge Workshops - Entries 102 (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 6 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

Become an in-demand partner. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Purchase each workshop individually or take them all! Handouts included. Activity number 31933. See other upcoming Bridge Workshops.

Nov. 29 - (2 separate classes) Art: Homeschool Winter Art Adventures (Ages 6-15)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Wednesdays, times vary (see below), 3 sessions, $70 per person, $77 nonresidents

Have fun while exploring different art media and techniques all with a wintery theme during this mini homeschool art class. One class runs from 10 a.m. to noon, activity number 31047, while another runs from 1 to 3 p.m., activity number 31048.

Nov. 29 - Early Learning: Cooks and Books (Ages 2-5 with an Adult)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents

Enjoy the reading of a favorite children’s book then make a tasty treat! Program includes snack. Activity number 31981.

Nov. 30 - Make: Homeschool Making & Engineering - Candy Catapult  (Ages 8-15)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 10 a.m. to Noon, 3 sessions, $70 per person, $77 nonresidents

NEW! Make your own candy catapult during this special making and engineering series. Students will explore physics, fabrication, and iterative design skills all while working to launch their candy the farthest. All supplies, and candy included. Activity number 31049.

Nov. 30 - Make: DIY Jewelry  (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m., 4 sessions, $126 per person, $139 nonresidents

NEW! Test out both laser cutting and 3D printing as you design and make your own digitally fabricated jewelry. This series will give you a little taste of the basics of 2D design, 3D design, laser cutting and 3D printing. Students will need to bring their own laptop computer to this class, contact [email protected] with questions. Activity number 31038.

Nov. 30 - Museum: TRAINS - "Harvey Houses & Harvey Girls" (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 6 to 7 p.m., $8 per person, $6.40 for museum members

Dee Harris from the National Archives will speak about the Harvey House restaurants and Harvey Girls - an efficient, well-trained, well-groomed corps of waitresses who played an invaluable role in railroad, restaurant, and women’s history. This program ties into the museum’s special interactive exhibit, “TRAINS: Transportation and the Transformation of Johnson County” which opened in mid-May and examines how everything changed after the railroad came through Johnson County for the first time in 1867. Dec. 1 - Dance: Drop in and Dance! Tap (Ages 14 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 9 p.m., $15 per person, $16.50 nonresidents

Each class in this Drop in and Dance series running through mid-December will focus on a different genre, including swing, tap, belly dancing, and musical theatre. In this tap class, you will explore the rich history of tap dancing, with a focus on rhythm, timing technique, and of course, fun! This drop-in series is perfect for dancers of all skill levels, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner. Each class will be taught by experienced instructors who are passionate about their respective dance styles, and who will guide you through the movements step-by-step. Classes are just $15 each so whether you’re looking to improve your technique, learn a new style, or just have fun and meet new people, our drop-in dance class series has something for everyone! Activity number 32127See all classes in this series.

Dec. 2 - Art: Machine Sewing Basics Lab (Ages 10-15)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., $45 per person, $50 nonresidents

NEW! Learn how to sew, using one of our sewing machines during this one-day lab! Sew small projects as you learn how to thread the machine, change your bobbin, and more as you get to know how a sewing machine works and sewing terminology. Activity number 31011.
