Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Nov 5 - 11:

 

Nov. 1 - Winter park hours begin and run through Feb. 29 - JCPRD.com/1159/Park-Hours

 

Nov. 3 deadline, games begin Dec. 1 or 2 – Soccer: Century Fieldhouse Winter Indoor (Grades 1 -8)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 8 games, days and times vary, $85 per person

Boys and girls are on separate teams. Format is 4v4(including the goalie). Teams will practice for 15-minutes on game day prior to their game as no weekly practice is scheduled through the league. First- and second-grade leagues play Friday evenings between 5:30 - 9:30 p.m, while third through eighth grade leagues play on Saturday between 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. Registration fee includes a game day T-shirt. For questions or to check availability after the deadline, please call 913-826-2850. Nov. 6 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older

Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices. Activity number 31652. Nov. 6 - Martial Arts: Mixed Martial Arts (Ages 6-12)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5 to 5:50 p.m., 6 sessions, $66 per person, $72 nonresidents

Traditional martial arts techniques taught with an emphasis on awareness-based self-defense and anti-bullying. Improve discipline, focus, and self-confidence while strengthening the body and mind. Activity number 31988.

 

Nov. 6 - Music: Tiny Tunes – Fall Session 2 (Ages 2-4)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Mondays, 10:15 to 11 a.m., 6 sessions, $95 per person, $105 nonresidents

Welcome to Tiny Tunes where little ones discover the magical world of music! In this enchanting program, our young maestros embark on a delightful journey of rhythm and melody. Through playful activities, interactive games, instrument exposure, and joyous sing-alongs, we nurture their budding musical talents and ignite a lifelong love for harmonies. So, join us as we unlock the harmony within each tiny heart and let their melodies soar with joy! Let’s create some beautiful music together at Tiny Tunes! Activity number 31230.

 

Nov. 6 - Make: Sewn Circuits (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m., 2 sessions, $64 per person, $70 nonresidents

Learn about electronics while making a piece of glowing, wearable art. Students will sew wearable electronic components onto fabric to make glowing DIY patches that can be worn on any fabric item. Prior hand sewing experience is recommended but not required. Activity number 30972.

 

Nov. 6 - Theatre: Adult Acting + Scene Study - Fall Session 2 (Ages 18 & Older)

Unlock your acting potential with our dynamic adult acting class. Nov. 6 - Dance: Teen ballet/Modern Dance - Fall Session 2 (Ages 13-18)

Nov. 6 -  Music: Mini Music Makers - Fall Session 2 (Ages 18 months-3 years with Adult)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Mondays, 9:15 to 10 a.m. p.m., 6 sessions, $95 per person, $105 nonresidents

This class is designed to provide your little ones with a fun and engaging introduction to music. We’ll explore different instruments, sing songs, and dance to music from around the world. This class is a great opportunity for your child to develop their coordination, language skills, and socialization in a safe and supportive environment. We encourage parents and caregivers to participate alongside their child, as it helps strengthen the parent child bond and fosters a love of music in you both! No prior music experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun and explore the world of music with your little one. We look forward to making music together! Activity number 31235.

 

Nov. 6 & 7  (four separate classes) - Dance: 50 Plus Tap - Beginning, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, days, times vary (see below), 6 sessions, $48 per person, $53 nonresidents

Learn basic tap fundamentals such as the Waltz, Clog, and Rhythm Time Steps in Beginner Tap. Stomp, shuffle, and stamp your way to the next level with Intermediate. Test out of Intermediate for Advanced. Hard-soled or tap dance shoes required. No previous tap dance necessary for Beginner.

Meeting on Mondays beginning Nov. 6 are: a Beginner class from 1:15 p.m. to 2:05 p.m., activity number 32054 and an Intermediate class is offered from 2 to 2:50 p.m., activity number 32059. Meeting on Tuesdays beginning Nov. 7 are: an Advanced Beginner class from 1:15 to 2:05 p.m., activity number 32062 and an Advanced class from 2 to 2:50 p.m., activity number 32064.

 

Nov. 7 - Gardening: Designing a Native Garden (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE 

What is this plant? How do I grow or do this? What should I put in my garden? So many questions and no one to ask until now. Join the K-State Extension Office on a variety of gardening topics and be free to discuss your gardening questions with a Master Gardener. This class covers matrix design to create a native garden that's pleasing to humans and serves as a habitat for wildlife. Native gardening is beautiful when done right, and it should never need an apology let alone receive a citation! Activity number 31917.

 

Nov. 7  - Dance: Teen Tap – Fall Session 2  (Ages 14-18)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Tuesdays, 7 to 8 p.m.,5 sessions, $95 per person, $105 nonresidents

Our newest teen tap class is an exhilarating and dynamic tap dance class designed specifically for teenagers who are passionate about rhythm, movement, and expression. This high energy class provides a fun and engaging environment where aspiring teen dancers can develop their tap skills, improve their technique, and explore the artistry of tap dance. No experience necessary, join us today to shuffle, flap, and stomp your way to dance greatness! This class concludes with a sharing for parents and guardians. activity number 31541.

 

Nov. 7 deadline - event takes place Nov. 9 - Special Event: Veterans Breakfast (All Ages)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., veterans eat free, $9 per person for others

Nov. 7 - Games: Virtual Scattergories® (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE

Think fast and write quicker in this fun and fast-paced game of alliterative words and categories!  Zoom link will be emailed the day prior to the program. Activity number 31825.

 

Nov. 8 - Alzheimer's: Navigating the Holidays (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE

Learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer's and dementia; how to approach someone about memory concerns; importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. Presentations by the Alzheimer's Association. Activity number 31924.

 

Nov. 8 Museum: Retro Storytime – The Fuzzy Duckling (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members

Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! A craft activity is included after the story ends. In this classic from 1949, a duckling goes for a walk and asks several other farmyard animals to join him, without success, until he isn't sure in which direction his home pond lies. He finally finds a family of ducks and his new home. Activity number 31730. Nov. 8  - Exercise: Tai Chi (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Wednesdays, 10 to 10:50 a.m., 4 sessions, $38 per person, $42 nonresidents)

Tai Chi offers a slow and gentle exercise with benefits in endurance, flexibility, and muscle strengthening. All experience levels welcome in this course. Activity number 32053.

 

Nov. 8 - Intro to Acting - Fall Session 2 (Ages 5-8)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Wednesdays, 4 to 4:50 p.m., 6 sessions, $107 per person, $118 nonresidents

Students will learn the basics of acting, including character development, improvisation, and stage presence. Through imaginative play and storytelling, we’ll work on building confidence, public speaking skills, and teamwork, all while having fun and exploring our creative sides. Whether your child is a natural performer or simply looking to try something new, our intro to acting course is the perfect place to learn and grow in a fun and supportive environment. Nov. 8 - Intermediate Acting - Fall Session 2 (Ages 9-13)

Young actors can build on the foundations of acting, exploring advanced techniques and skills that will help them take their performances to the next level. Through a combination of scene work, improvisation, and character development, students will learn how to create dynamic and compelling performances on stage. We’ll also work on developing advanced communication and collaboration skills, as well as building confidence and stage presence. Whether your child is an experienced performer or looking to take their first steps into the world of acting, our intermediate class offers a fun and supportive space to explore their passions for acting. Let’s embark on an exciting journey of self-discovery and creativity together! Activity number 31246.

 

Nov. 8 - Advanced Acting - Fall Session 2 (Ages 14-18)

Explore advanced acting techniques, character development, and scene study to help students create powerful performances on stage. Through intensive scene work, monologues, and character analysis, students will hone their skills in improvisation, emotional range, and stage presence. We’ll also focus on developing communication and collaboration skills. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where students can develop their talents and take their performances to the next level. Whether your child is an experienced performer or looking to pursue a career in acting, our class offers a dynamic and supportive space to explore their passion and develop their skills. Nov. 11 & 18 - Fall Public Hayrides (All Ages)

Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park, 7460 Ogg Road, Shawnee, offered select Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., $11 per person, $12 nonresidents

Last 2 of 7 public hayrides for 2023! Enjoy the outdoors with a hayride through Oak Ridge Parklands at Shawnee Mission Park. Your hayride concludes with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. Advance registration required. Children 2 and under are free.
