CEC Artslink Fellow

This month, 10 arts organizations throughout the US continued online residencies with artists from Afghanistan, Georgia, Poland, Romania, Tajikistan, and Ukraine in preparation for in person residencies in the fall this year. Kala is honored to be part of the CEC Artslink cohort hosting International Fellows. Kala is working with Fellow Lia Dostlieva and will welcome Lia to Kala in October.

Intro to Lumen Printing

Saturdays, June 22 & 29, 10am-2pm

Instructor: Christine Huhn

Location: Kala Printmaking Studio

In this class, students will be given an introduction to the camera-less photographic process, lumen printing. Create unique imagery in the photographic darkroom using silver gelatin (black and white) paper, found objects and light. Students will be able to experiment with different light sources and photographic papers. Students may also bring negatives to class to experiment with if they have them.

Intro to Watercolor Painting

Tuesdays, July 9-Aug 13, 6-8pm

Instructor: Jennifer Mazzucco

Location: Kala Community Classroom

Explore the basics of watercolor painting ! Participants will learn fundamental concepts such as brush strokes, color theory, composition and watercolor techniques (wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet, etc.) through guided painting prompts. There will also be room for experimentation as participants are encouraged to embrace spontaneity and the playful dance between water and color. No skills required, all are welcome.

Drawing with Procreate

Thursdays, July 11-25, 6-9pm

Instructor: Corrine Hatt

Location: Kala Community Classroom

Procreate is an intuitive digital illustration app for the iPad that is great for quick sketching as well as for producing finished digital artworks. Students will start drawing immediately with the basic tools before moving on to explore the surprisingly large number of features in Procreate, from layers and masks to transformations and simple animation. Bring your iPad and your ideas, and we’ll explore how you can make them happen. All are welcome!

Intro to Screenprinting

Saturdays, July 13- Aug 10, 10am-1pm

Instructor: Jos Sances

Location: Kala Printmaking Studio

This workshop will cover the fundamentals of screenprinting with a focus on creating handmade film positives using various drawing materials and analog stencil making. Participants will learn how to take their design from sketch to finished screenprints, moving into multi-color/layer printing. Though the emphasis will be on analog film making, we will also incorporate digital methods of creating and editing film as needed. All are welcome, including those new to screenprinting and experienced printers looking to experiment with the possibilities of handmade film.

Teen Studio: The Comics Lab

Week 6: July 22-26, ages 11-17

We will explore writing, storyboarding, illustrating, and laying out a visual narrative from start to finish, adopt techniques seen in animation and graphic novels, and develop and gain confidence in drawing the human anatomy and perspective. By the end of the week, participants will have a unique comic zine or hand-drawn storyboard highlighting their creativity and new storytelling abilities to share with families and friends!

Teen Studio: Digital Photography

Week 7: July 29-Aug 2, ages 11-17

Experiment with a range of photography styles and techniques from landscapes and portraits to photomontage and collage. A series of projects will offer opportunities to learn the technical and conceptual aspects of photography. We’ll cover framing and composition and spend time at Kala’s digital lab for an introduction to photo editing and printing.

Art In Motion

Week 8: August 5-9, ages 6-11

Working across various media such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, participants will experiment with color, light, movement (kinetic elements), and more! Throughout the week, we will explore various forms and themes inspired by the natural environment, soundscapes, and our bodies. We will experiment with diverse art materials to create artworks that incorporate movement. From three-dimensional color wheels to kaleidoscopes and self-portraits, let’s imagine the possibilities of making art in motion!
