MADISON, Wis. — Republican Congressman and keyboard warrior Derrick Van Orden has spent the last week spewing false information on social media about the recovery from Hurricane Helene, falsely claiming that President Biden and Vice President Harris had not responded to the storm. In reality, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their Administration have received praise from local leaders for providing immediate aid to communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Meanwhile, the same week that Hurricane Helene made landfall, Derrick Van Orden voted against funding FEMA. And at the same time that Van Orden is trying to attack Democratic leadership in Washington, DC, his own leader, Speaker Mike Johnson (who Van Orden has praised as a “solid dude”) is refusing to call back members of Congress to vote on emergency funding for the victims and communities impacted by Hurricane Helene, arguing that there’s no rush since “it takes a while to calculate the actual damages.”
President Biden asked lawmakers to approve $1.6 billion in federal funding towards the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program, which is at risk of running out of funding. Republicans like Mike Johnson and Derrick Van Orden would rather refuse to do their jobs and vote against funding FEMA than provide aid to communities in need, leaving us all saying “we’re all trying to find the guys who did this.”
