From: Los Angeles OperaCelebrating Operas in Spanish
Hispanic and Latin art—in all its incredible diversity and richness—has had a profound influence on culture in the United States. That influence extends to opera as well, both in the past and present, as Hispanic and Latin composers have given us some of the most exciting operas in recent memory such as Florencia en el Amazonas, El último sueño de Frida y Diego and Ainadamar. For Hispanic Heritage Month this year, we wanted to look at some operas by Latin and Hispanic composers that have made an impact in the opera house, with a special appreciation for some modern works that are paving the way for the future of the art form, two of which we’ll have the honor of presenting in 2025.

Maximizing Madame Butterfly
Our new production of Madame Butterfly has been a hit with critics and audiences alike for bringing the story to life like never before. Stage and Cinema called it "the most glorious and cogent version you will ever see." We talked to our stars and director about its unique approach and how it—in addition to Karah Son's remarkable performance in the title role—heightens the depth and emotion of this tragic love story.
Madame Butterfly Rapid Fire
The cast for Madame Butterfly have been a joy to work with and all the singers have brought their bright and lovely personalities to rehearsals and performances.
We wanted to give a chance for you to get to know this brilliant cast, so we asked a round of exciting rapid-fire questions! Watch to see whether Hyona Kim can decide between whether she likes cats or dogs, or which opera is Jonathan Tetelman's all-time favorite.
