Republican mega-donors are relying on Hogan to flip control of the Senate to Republicans

Maryland leaders held a virtual press call Tuesday calling out Republican Larry Hogan for being heavily bankrolled by GOP mega-donors seeking to flip control of the Senate. Tuesday’s call comes on the heels of Washington Post reporting highlighting how extensive Hogan’s ties go, and featured Senator Ben Cardin, Rep. John Sarbanes, Rep. Jamie Raskin, and Maryland Democratic Party Chair Ken Ulman.

“I’ve seen the Republicans in control of the Senate. I saw what they did with Supreme Court nominations. I’ve seen what they’ve done to the agenda: blocking issues from coming to the floor when there’s adequate support to pass, and then bringing up their extreme agenda,” said Senator Ben Cardin. “These mega-contributors understand that today, politics is a team sport. They understand that if the Republicans get control of the Senate again, their narrow agenda and support for special interests will win. They know Larry Hogan will be on that team. Marylanders do not want that team to be in control of the United States Senate. It’s another reason why we are energized in this campaign to make sure Angela Alsobrooks is elected as our next United States Senator.”

“Marylanders do not like this idea of outside forces and big money coming in and trying to hijack our state for purposes of a larger agenda, to use our state to hijack the United States Senate,” said Representative John Sarbanes. “We’ve hit this theme repeatedly because it is at the core of why the Republicans are focusing on Maryland. It’s at the core of why they’re assembling these mega-donors, these billionaires from around the country, to funnel millions of dollars into this state: because they want to get the United States Senate.”

“Why are right-wing, anti-choice billionaires from all over America spending millions of dollars in the U.S. Senate election? They are doing it because they are trying to put another brick in the wall of a MAGA-majority to promote Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda,” said Representative Jamie Raskin. “Maryland’s people are politically savvy. They understand exactly what’s going on and why there is this extraordinary mobilization of right-wing money from around the country for Larry Hogan.”

“The U.S. Senate seat from the state of Maryland is not for sale, especially for out-of-state billionaires doing Mitch McConnell’s bidding,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Ken Ulman. “The 51st vote and control of the U.S. Senate runs through Maryland. We are here to make sure that folks know that out-of-state billionaires have no place to come in and try to buy an election.”
