Nearly 100% of Meals on Wheels clients with pets say their four-legged friends provide comfort through the hard times.
That’s certainly been the case for Sharon. Over 20 years ago, she was diagnosed with macular degeneration, a devastating eye disorder that causes progressive vision loss. Now unable to drive or even recognize the faces of longtime friends, Sharon spends most of her days at home with her seven-year-old dachshund, Kali Mae.
“My dog is what keeps me going,” said Sharon. “We’re best friends.”
Caring for Kali Mae on a fixed income isn’t easy, though. At points, Sharon has resorted to feeding the pup her own food.
“It’s so hard,” Sharon said. “You sometimes have to make some very tough choices.”
“She loves me, and I love her. We stick together.”
Sadly, many homebound seniors like Sharon put their pet’s needs before their own. More than 1 in 5 Meals on Wheels clients with animals report skipping meals themselves to keep their animal companions fed. Around 30% make sacrifices in other areas — whether it’s forgoing vital medical care or cutting back on utilities.
No senior should have to wait for the support they and their pets deserve. That’s why we’ve teamed up with PetSmart Charities to help local programs across the country deliver 15 million meals to pets since 2020, including Kali Mae. Many local programs go a step further by offering other pet services, such as grooming, access to veterinary care and emergency boarding.
This tail-wagging achievement of 15 million meals wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of people like you. We are deeply grateful for your dedication to improving the lives of seniors and their furry companions.
