Meals on Wheels America Newsletter: A Visit from HHS, Fighting Isolation and More!

A special delivery with HHS Secretary Kennedy

Earlier this month, Meals on Wheels America and Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland welcomed leaders from the United States Department of Health and Human Services — including Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — to witness the life-changing work of a local provider in action.

During the visit, HHS government officials learned more about our efforts to deliver nutritious meals and moments of connection to seniors across Maryland — and beyond. “History will judge the humanity of our civilization by how we care for our elderly,” said Secretary Kennedy. Meals on Wheels helps aging Americans stay well nourished, healthy and independent at home, reducing the need for more costly hospital visits and long-term care alternatives.

We shared that too many older adults are still waiting for help — but with greater federal support that reflects the growing need, we can change that.

Advocating for meals that matter

As our team continues to push for support across America, Josh Protas, our Chief Advocacy and Policy Officer, was a featured guest on the latest CareLab podcast. Josh highlights how Meals on Wheels America is working to garner more federal support for senior nutrition programs by calling on Congress to reauthorize the Older Americans Act to secure funding and uplift our national network. Tune in to hear how advocacy transforms the voices of people like you into meaningful impact, and why now — more than ever — is the time to speak up for older Americans.

Fighting the loneliness epidemic, one innovative solution at a time

June brought us Pet Appreciation Week and Global Loneliness Awareness Week, which reminds us why connection matters. Loneliness is more than a feeling — it’s a growing health crisis. For over 50 years, Meals on Wheels has been helping provide the meaningful connection and belonging our aging neighbors need.

Meals on Wheels supports the growing number of local programs that help keep seniors and their pets together and invests in proven solutions — like friendly visits and phone calls — that help older adults feel seen, valued and less alone. Together, with your support, we’re building a more connected, compassionate future.
