Memory Lane: Derrick Van Orden’s Frightening Farm Bill Failure: All Hat and No Cattle

Government and Politics

MADISON, Wis. — Around the bend of Van Orden memory lane, another fright lies in wait: the dead-on-arrival Farm Bill. Derrick Van Orden is screwing the family farms he claims to represent and leaving children to starve—just so he can bend over for Donald Trump and his rich buddies.

The Republican Farm Bill Derrick Van Orden supports would cut nearly $30 billion in SNAP benefits and fund programs that consolidate the dairy industry—changes that fast-track the death of family dairy farms in western Wisconsin.

Van Orden plays at being a fence-fixing cowboy to western Wisconsinites’ faces and then flies back to Washington to sell out their family farms to the big agribusinesses that fund his campaign. Derrick Van Orden is all hat and no cattle—the everyman’s DC sellout, too busy puffing his chest to cover up his greedy gut.

Here’s a reminder of Derrick Van Orden’s sour milk Farm Bill:

  • Derrick Van Orden’s failure to pass another bill is crushing to the 64,100 farms in Wisconsin who will miss out on critical monthly payments they rely on to keep their tractors running and keep feeding America. The 30,300 dairy jobs in Van Orden’s district will be the first to lose their monthly support payments.

  • It’s not just farmers who will pay the price—Wisconsin families will, too. If another Farm Bill isn’t passed, it could cost taxpayers nearly $20 billion and even double the price of milk and other produce at grocery stores.

  • Derrick Van Orden supported cuts to SNAP benefits in the Farm Bill, saying that fraud, waste, and abuse “absolutely exists” With SNAP benefits

  • Derrick Van Orden said he was “incredibly proud” of the work he did for dairy farmers in the Farm Bill—he just didn’t say which ones. He claims he supports the backbone of Wisconsin agriculture, but he takes all his campaign money from big agribusiness and turns his back on family farms.
