Ending free school meals could raise costs for parents by nearly $900 per year, and defunding school safety measures puts children at risk

LANSING - With the release of the House Republicans’ paltry education budget, Republican Speaker MAGA Matt Hall is focusing on raising costs and endangering students’ health and well-being. 

“This education budget kills the school breakfast and lunch programs, cuts funding for school safety and mental health programs, and will reduce the actual dollars going into the classroom,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel. “House Republicans’ education budget could raise costs for working families by nearly $900 a year, force students to go hungry, and take money away from teachers trying to help students learn - while doing absolutely nothing to improve reading, math, or science scores.

“This sham education budget is yet another tactic to distract from the fact that MAGA Matt Hall and his Republican caucus aren’t doing the work to ensure our state government won’t shut down. They are constantly failing to do the most basic aspect of their jobs, and if this government shuts down at any point this year, it will be because of Matt Hall.”
