I’m pleased to announce that I am placing greater emphasis on the art advisory services that have always been integral to my work. For decades, it has been my privilege to help clients from a wide range of backgrounds navigate the complexities of the art market to build highly personal, valuable, and culturally significant collections.

A defining relationship early on was with John C. Whitehead, former chairman of Goldman Sachs and U.S. deputy secretary of state during the Reagan administration. In 1981, we embarked on a 35-year journey through French art—Braque, Gauguin, Modigliani, Monet, Pissarro—that led to an extraordinary collection whose value increased markedly over time. It was a joy to witness John’s evolution as a collector: his increasing passion for and curiosity about art, development of a keen eye, and eventual trust in his own instincts.

My advising begins with the discovery of quality work, then proceeds to detailed analysis of market value; documentation of authenticity, provenance, title, condition, and bibliography; and, finally, the many details of ensuring safe and enduring display. I seek out art that clients might like and that would suit their collections, always drawing on art historical perspective and scholarship. When appropriate, I introduce innovative work outside the scope of typical tastes. I also steer clients away from purchases when necessary—this is as important to me as making suggestions about what they should acquire.
