From groceries to health care to utilities, Republicans’ billionaire budget will raise prices on working families across the state

LANSING - In a new bombshell report from the Center for American Progress, researchers found that Trump and Republicans’ billionaire budget will cost working families thousands of dollars more every single year on everyday expenses. As Republicans bend over backwards to serve Trump’s billionaire buddies, Michigan’s middle class is forced to pay the price as this budget explodes the price of health care, groceries, gas, and more. 

“Republicans knew this budget would devastate working families when they passed it, and they simply don’t care,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel. “They don’t care that Michiganders will struggle to afford groceries, and they don’t care that parents of children with cancer will be drowning in medical debt as they lose health insurance.

“All Trump and his Republican lackeys care about is lining the pockets of the billionaires that got them elected, even as it brings countless Michigan families closer to poverty. It’s heartless, and Michiganders will remember that Republicans up and down the ballot supported this agenda – and show them the door next November.”

Check out some of the highlights from the report:

• Cuts to Medicaid and loss of health insurance coverage
• The OBBBA will slash federal Medicaid spending by approximately $1 trillion over the next decade, contributing to the loss of health insurance coverage for approximately 15 million people in the United States, meaning increased out-of-pocket health care costs for families.

• Cuts to food assistance and higher grocery costs: 
• The OBBBA enacted the largest cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in history, putting 123,000 people in Michigan at immediate risk of losing some of their SNAP benefits, including parents with children ages 14 and older, older workers, veterans, those experiencing homelessness, and youth aging out of foster care.
• This elevates hunger and raises the cost of groceries for millions of people at a time when food prices are rising due to Trump’s tariffs, which will strain families’ budgets. The costs of grocery items, including bananas and coffee, have already risen by more than 5 percent since the start of the year.
• Job losses and state and local revenue declines: 
• Medicaid and SNAP cuts will cause the loss of an estimated 41,500 jobs in Michigan in 2029. Michigan’s state and local governments will also lose an estimated $319 million in tax revenue, squeezing public budgets for vital services such as education and social services.

Republicans up and down the ballot support Trump’s budget bill that is skyrocketing prices:

• John James cast one of the deciding votes on the budget bill and has recently dodged questions on his support for Medicaid cuts. The entire GOP field for governor has also supported these cuts, including lobbyist Tom Leonard, who said “Yes, I support that. 100%” when asked about the cuts, and Aric Nesbitt, voted against a state Senate resolution condemning the bill. Mike Cox has also voiced his support for Trump’s cuts.
• Mike Rogers endorsed Trump’s toxic tax law, which rips healthcare away from over 700,000 Michiganders, and agreed he would have voted for it had he been elected to the Senate.
