Marcia (Augusta) Burr Coffey, age 84, of Monroe, died peacefully in the comfort of her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family, on May 16, 2025. Born in Bridgeport on November 2, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Marcus Wheeler Burr and Winifred Smith Burr.
Marcia was raised in Bridgeport and then attended and graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon, a boarding school in Massachusetts in 1958. During college, she spent a semester abroad working at Sydenham Children’s Hospital in London, England. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Keuka College in New York in 1962.
She began her career as a public health nurse, working in the Fairfield school system in the mornings and visiting patients in town in the afternoons. She went on to have a rewarding career as a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Manor in Trumbull for more than 40 years.
She was a lifetime member of the Monroe Historical Society, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and a board member for the Monroe Center Cemetery Association for many years.
In 1963, Marcia married and moved to Monroe, where she would reside for 62 years. She and her husband purchased a historic home and spent countless hours restoring it. She was a devoted supporter of her late husband as he researched and wrote the history of the town. She later became his caretaker for many years during his declining health, a role she took on with grace and love. Marcia much preferred taking care of others than being a patient herself.
She loved crafts and took great pride in her perennial gardens. With a true green thumb, she found joy in flower arranging and holiday decorating. She also loved browsing tag sales and antique stores, visiting their getaway home in Vermont, and volunteering for various community events.
Marcia will be remembered not only for her strength and compassion but also for her unwavering generosity. She gave freely of her time, her care, and her heart – always putting others first and never hesitating to lend a helping hand. Her quiet acts of kindness and deep commitment to her family and community touched many lives.
Family was always Marcia’s first priority. She was an amazing mother and an even more amazing grandmother. She cared for her granddaughter and three grandsons from infancy while still working full-time. For many years, she worked the 3–11 p.m. shift after caring for her grandchildren all day.
Even in her final months, she faced life on her own terms — fiercely independent, deeply compassionate, devoted to those she loved, and never losing her quick wit and sense of humor.
Predeceased by her devoted husband of 60 years, Edward Nichols Coffey and her beloved son, David Burr Coffey. She is survived by her loving children, Jonathan Nichols Coffey of Oxford and Laura Coffey Trautz and her husband, Todd of Shelton; daughter-in-law, Karen Culp Coffey of Monroe; cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Blewitt of Watertown, Hunter Trautz of Stamford, and Drew and Spencer Trautz of Shelton and great grandchildren, Isabella and Dominic Blewitt. She also leaves behind several dear friends who brought joy to her life over the years.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Ioana Preda for her many years of care and compassion as well as the Hartford Healthcare Hospice team, especially Brian Jakabcin, who was a tremendous support to the family over the past couple of years through the loss of several family members.
