Last Thursday, August 1st, 2024, the Oklahoma Democratic Party hosted the Oklahoma Future Fund Celebration at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The event was a resounding success, with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear delivering a powerful keynote address about the importance of running for office in a red state. The event was marked by a sense of unity and excitement, culminating in a surprise announcement that the state party had written 90 donation checks—one for each state legislature candidate.

"I’m so thankful Gov. Beshear came to Oklahoma. He’s proof that working-class Americans will vote for Democrats when Democrats focus on kitchen table issues and making sure everyone has a fair shot at a good life—even in red states."

Governor Beshear’s speech resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing the need for Democrats to prioritize issues that directly impact working families. Representative Melissa Provenzano expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m so thankful Gov. Beshear came to Oklahoma. He’s proof that working-class Americans will vote for Democrats when Democrats focus on kitchen table issues and making sure everyone has a fair shot at a good life—even in red states.”

Tulsa County Commissioner Candidate Sarah Gray reflected on the importance of Governor Beshear’s message, noting that it “hit home because Project 2025 feels like old news to us in Oklahoma and Kentucky—extremism has been in our backyards for years. But there’s no one tougher than a Red State Democrat who’s found their community and their voice. Our power grows each time we’re together.”

And she was right. The power of a group united by a cause could be felt throughout the entire room with a seemingly never-ending supply of handshakes, hugs, and smiles. Kevin Dawson, host of Coffee With Democrats, captured the spirit of Gov. Beshear’s keynote perfectly, calling it “electrifying” before mentioning “the thunderous applause by the audience, the standing ovations, Democrats from Oklahoma… had decades worth of so much pent-up energy…. Governor Beshear’s rousing speech played perfectly to feed that energy.”

In addition to Governor Beshear, the event featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including Former Attorney General Mike Turpin, Former Governor David Walters, Senator Kay Floyd, Senator Julia Kirt, and Representative Cyndi Munson. Representative Jared Deck entertained the crowd with his brand of Red Dirt music, while Representative Forrest Bennett served as the emcee.

State Party Chair Alicia Andrews highlighted the significance of the evening, stating, “This event marks a turning point for Oklahoma Democrats. For the first time in two decades, we are financially supporting our candidates in a substantial way. This is a testament to our commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive future for Oklahoma.”

The announcement that Chairwoman Alicia Andrews had 90 signed checks to hand out to state campaigns was met with surprise and gratitude from the candidates. Candidate for House District 4, Chris Wier, remarked, “I very much appreciate the check to my campaign. We have a lot of work to do, and to be honest, it STARTS with writing checks to rural candidates. We have to invest in longstanding political infrastructure.”

House District 90 Candidate and State Party Secretary Nana Dankwa said, "I had an incredible time at the event, especially meeting Governor Beshear, a potential vice-presidential pick. As Secretary of the party, I was deeply honored to be part of the leadership team distributing checks to our candidates, and as a candidate myself, I was thrilled to receive one. It was an all-around fantastic and energizing event!"

Even candidates who were unable to attend the event felt the impact. Another rural candidate Crystal LaGrone (House District 12), expressed her relief and excitement upon learning she would receive a check from the state party. “I have been nervous about the amount I have been able to raise so far, but the funds from ODP will provide a much-needed boost in helping get my message of hope and common sense out to the district,” she said.

Chairwoman Andrews and Executive Director Lauren Craig both thanked the College Democrats of Oklahoma, for playing a crucial role as key volunteers and helping the state ensure the event ran smoothly. Congressional District 4 Candidate Mary Brannon said she “wanted to thank all the Democrats who are responsible for putting this event together. It was well organized, at a beautiful place, and great for networking with people you don’t see often.”

The Oklahoma Future Fund Celebration was more than just an event; it was a reaffirmation of the Oklahoma Democratic Party’s commitment to making a difference right here at home. The enthusiasm and unity displayed by attendees, coupled with the financial support for candidates, have helped re-energize the party and set the stage for a promising future this November and beyond.
